don't do this.Overrated: Fred Trueman
Underrated: Alan Davidson
Stokes' numbers in 2024 don't demand outrage on that viewpoint, although I would maintain he's still a hell of an asset as a guy who is a natural leader and does his best work when it's most needed. I reckon you can carry a guy like that in a sport like cricket if the rest of the team is going reasonably well.Underrated: KL Rahul

Don't think there's a Blair Hartland fan club out there.Stokes' numbers in 2024 don't demand outrage on that viewpoint, although I would maintain he's still a hell of an asset as a guy who is a natural leader and does his best work when it's most needed. Overrated: The vast majority of NZ cricketers in the 90s, and by extension their children (Rutherford, Latham)
Perfect example though. Hartland averaged 26 in FC cricket.Don't think there's a Blair Hartland fan club out there.

You can carry him in a team sure, but I think the overrated bit is when you get into comparing him favourably with ATG all-rounders, which is where a number of people see him sitting.Stokes' numbers in 2024 don't demand outrage on that viewpoint, although I would maintain he's still a hell of an asset as a guy who is a natural leader and does his best work when it's most needed. From an NZ perspective I think the nomination makes sense. Rutherford has/had a reputation as a very talented batsman who suffered from being thrown to the wolves way too young, before eventually coming into his own somewhat (and then prematurely retiring). He was probably seen as one of our leading batsmen of the early 90s alongside Crowe and Jones, and the fact he was made captain attests to him being seen as sort of an "alpha" in NZ cricket back then. In the cold light of day though, his numbers indicate that really he just kinda sucked. So, overrated.Love the implication that someone out there actually rates Rutherford.....
Yeah I'm completely on board with that. Consistency would keep him out of that conversation...but then again, how many of the ATGs have his clutch innings and moments? Not all of them. You can carry him in a team sure, but I think the overrated bit is when you get into comparing him favourably with ATG all-rounders, which is where a number of people see him sitting.
I just don't really see how he's in the conversation when you are comparing him almost entirely with guys who were at the very least frontline players, if not elites or ATGs, in their stronger discipline.
