Konstas is also being type-cast as some Warner clone who whacks the new ball around when in the majority of Shield innings I've seen, at least the ones not on dead roads, he's been pretty cautious and watchful (e.g. made 30-odd on an incredibly challenging pitch against Tasmania last summer, and struck at around 40). So it's not even clear this selection achieves their stated rationale.

EDIT: Got two games mixed up

Oh my god the stated rationale is that McSweeney is too slow and they want more intent

ffs
You've gotta be flipping kidding me. A nd it shows it was that BBL innings that did it.

We don't need intent, we just need someone who can get us to at least 30 without loss and get the writing off the ball. Also Khawaja can hardly be excused on those grounds. in any case Rahul has done well by occupying the crease.

The worst thing will be if he tries to go the bashing route because that's what they expect. Kind of idea that could cause long-term or permanent damage to his career.

Jhye Richardson back too apparently. Love him to bits but how they have any confidence in his fitness, I have no idea.
Yeah as much as he's the best bowler outside the team and that you wouldn't want to risk a rookie in a sudden-death match (but then why Konstas?), I really don't think you can risk him right now.

In fairness though most of the other options also have big injury clouds over them (Neser, Johnson, Bartlett, Morris). Out of those who I have confidence in being fit the only two I think are worth picking are Paris or O'Neill, and it doesn't seem like the Oz selectors think much about them (certainly true of Paris).

Yeah it's actually a good thing that he has the gears to bat cautiously in difficult conditions. But this kind of talk worries me deeply.

I think Paris might be injured now.

Also, there's no-one who wants to Richardson back more than I do, but if he wasn't fit enough to be in the squad two weeks ago, how is he now, having played one BBL game?

How much more evidence does the CA board need to sack selectors. McSweeney has a career FC strike rate of 41 batting 3-4. They then select him to open and drop him because he didn't score fast enough at SR of 35 in difficult conditions.

The funny thing is they say Konstas gives aggression but he only has a SR of 51, lower than Smith, Head, Marsh, Carey and Starc.

I can see Konstas now thinking he has to change his FC game and bat like his T20 the other night due to mixed messaging

In all honesty Jhye should go the Anderson/Southee route and learn how to field in the cordon because he basically can't field anywhere else.
Problem is that at second or more you'll still be expected to dive around. He'd need to field first slip, and I don't see them letting a fast bowler field there and having to replace him when he's bowling.

I was a bit worried when I saw how he was batting in that PMs XI game too. Okay it was basically an LO game but still, I don't want him thinking he has to play a shot a ball and run around the crease to make it in Tests. Rishabh Pant can do it but he's one of a kind.

Probably the one day innings against the Indians and then the BBL innings sealed McSweeney's fate. Dropping the young player and keeping Usman tends to confirm the mates club between snr players and selectors.
