Ponting along with Viv were arguably the best players of short pitched bowling in the game.
Lara was in his league of his own and enough has been said about him in this thread.

Ponting in ODIs however blows Lara out of competition, arguably among the greatest match winners of all time.

Ponting never had ATG series on the level of Lara
No one had really, bar possibly Bradman in 1930. The 1999 moreso than the 2001 imo. A 62 in the 1st Test, a match winning 213 when the team was in a really tight spot (seemed pretty lost) in the 2nd, One of if not the best knock of all time with the 153* in the 3rd and a century in the 4th; against McGrath at his best alongside Warne, Gillespie, MacGill and Miller is just bonkers to think of.

Lara has a big gap between home vs away record.58 in home vs 48 in away.He ave 44 in SENA
It's taken some time but I am glad it is becoming more common knowledge that Lara was slightly underwhelming away from home. Some more dedicated Lara fans here have tried to conceal or downplay this fact.

I personally think such a record disqualifies him from the top tier category. I want someone in that top tier to average 50 plus away. Lara is first in the second tier list.

Ummmm...... No he isn't. Big run series and Great series are two different things.
Of course they are different.

Lara with his ATG performances is what I call being the best 'in the zone' player of all-time. Sort of the flip side to his inconsistency.

Which is a definite feather in his cap against Ponting, though I think peer rep and Lara establishing his greatness by the 90s are bigger factors.
