South Africa team selection

We need both to contribute they are the most experienced in a very inexperienced test batting lineup.

As for selection will be interesting to see who they go for as cover for Coetzee. Logical options probably Swanepoel, sipamla or Olivier but wouldn't bet against a wild card pick of maphaka. Took 6 in the game and terrorized the Warriors batters by all accounts in this week's 4 day game.

Breetzke is in for Mulder.

The question around Coetzee's replacement is whether they bring someone straight into the team or whether Paterson gets promoted because he's already in the squad (in which case it doesn't make too much difference who they call up). Standard practice would be to go for the guy already in the squad, but maybe Paterson was picked because Western Province weren't playing and it allowed the others to get some game time.

So is it possible that Paterson will be released to play and two bowlers get called up? Conrad seems to like Paterson, so I suspect not, but you never know.

Paterson is very similar to the Fernandos (yes even if Viswa is a leftie) in that he bowls good lines and can get movement but he isn't what you would describe as quick. I think he will be serviceable but the difference between the two seam attacks was that Rabada,Coetzed and Jansen were doing what Sri Lanka did in the first dig but constantly quicker.

I can't see Shukri going for two spinners for the next game but you never know. He might slot Muthusamy in at 7 for Mulder and Paterson for Coetzee. He could add Rickelton in at 6 and play Paterson because he could function as a holding bowler along for long spells or he could get Muthusamy in at 7 and drop Keshav for Paterson and Maphaka/Sipamla etc. It's a tough one to call right now.

Interesting to see what happens with guys like Markram, Rickelton, Stubbs, Jansen, Maharaj & Rabada here with first T20 starting on the day after what could be the last day of 2nd test. Assume they rest. Cone back for 50-overs.

SA A play England Lions from the 10th too in a FC game.

Given the fast bowlers injury situation they have to be rested for the tests.

Yeah.

Can see the T20 squad being something like the below. In some circles, Walter is under pressure.

Assuming Ricks & Pato play in PE.

1. Reeza Hendricks
2. Matthew Breetzke
3. Rassie Vd Dussen (I wouldn't)
4. Heinrich Klaasen
5. Donovan Ferreira
6. Dave Miller
7. Andile Simelane/Patrick Kruger
8. Bjorn Fortuin
9. Tabraiz Shamsi/Nqaba Peter
10. Anrich Nortje
11. Kwena Maphaka/Ottneil Baartman

SA A v Lions

Beyers Swanepoel get injured last game?
Marques Ackerman has been injured.

1. Jordan Hermann
2. Neil Brand
3. Lesego Senokwane
4. Raynard van Tonder
5. Dewald Brevis
6. Sine Qeshile
7. Ruan de Swardt
8. Prenelan Subrayen/Kyle Simmonds
9. Codi Yusuf
10. Lutho Sipamla
11. Daryn Dupavillon/Migael Pretorius

Is it too soon for Maphaka to be in the test team ?. he is still a kid, his body has not fully developed yet, he has played so little first class cricket and 5 day test matches are much tougher, my worry is pushing him too quick he may end up like Ngam and Zondeki, would have chosen either Sipamla, Pretorius or Swanepoel.

He hasn't been picked for the team, just the squad. Paterson was already in the squad as the backup bowler, so it's more likely that he'll be Coetzee's replacement in the starting line up. Obviously, we don't know that for certain, but it's premature to be questioning whether Maphaka should have been picked for the team.

Understand the concerns from @Northerner but I don't think it's a surprise.

There is the decision to weigh up in rewarding guys like Swanepoel, Pretorius, Sipamla and whoever else like Dupavillon, Yusuf & realising it isn't out of the question to think their abilities now will be outshone by Maphaka & that he could come on leaps and bounds with the exposure

Touch wood, but physically he looks so well put together with no injury record that if professionals (physical conditioning) in the modern era look after him he should be fine.

Honestly I think if you are injury prone like a Mfuneko Ngam or Zondeki there is very little that can be done to save your career at any age.

Also we have to be realistic, Kwena Maphaka is already a top 7 bowler for redball cricket in the system, and seeing how little FC and test cricket we play it makes sense to put him in the squad with so many injury issues, with guys like Rabada and Jansen in the team he will learn a lot.

Dale had only 3 FC games more then Kwena when he was picked. If all our fast bowlers were fit and available I would give Kwena more time but given Coetzee, ngidi are injured and Nortje unavailable then I rather go for him then some of the other options.

From what I read Beyers got concussed vs the lions. May actually have been Kwena who got him.

Linde's back!
Great to see re:Linde

Probably our best squad available.

Simelane obviously the talent to work with, with not much performance behind him but I liked his attitude v India.

Prefer Hermann and Brevis to play for SA A v Lions.
