These last few posts sums up exactly what Vaughan was saying. The Australian top 6 is too comfortable because they and selectors believe there is no-one better to replace them.

Stuff that, if you average 23 at #3 over 12 months you should be gone. Unlikely a new player could do any worse. Need to shake things up and show nobody is undroppable

So what, Dean Jones made 100* in his 3rd last innings. Have you seen Labuschagne's last 10 innings:

3, 2, 6, 90, 2, 1, 5, 3, 1*, 10
Haha that 10 innings record now picked up by cricinfo

"His scores across those innings read: 10, 1*, 3, 5, 1, 2, 90, 6, 2, and 3."

Harris would probably be better than "literally nothing". I appreciate how difficult conditions have been at late but... he's #3. It's his job to score runs in tough conditions. If he's eking out 30s and 40s that would be one thing but the bloke isn't getting out of single figures the vast majority of the time as it stands.

Yeah, my argument against Bancroft & Harris has always been that they’ll be lucky to average over 30 in tests

That’s looking fkn good right now

At this stage if it wasn't for my trepidation over his fielding I'd consider it worth having Harris up top and McSweeney three. Having two lefties might reduce the threat of Bumrah's opening salvo just a hair.

Yeah I posted yesterday that I'm leaning in this direction as well. His fielding is shithouse but it is what it is, we need someone who can at least survive an hour or two against the new rock.

And with Marnus it's clear the problem is 100% mental too and for a change I believe Craddock when he says that his obsessive personality with respect to cricket is making things worse, not better.

Absolutely, he needs to take some time away from the game and pick up some different hobbies. He's always been a mini-Smith but should take a page from his book and try to become a bit more rounded. Not for the team, for the sake of himself.

It is difficult because the same thing that makes him an outstanding player will also lead to this kind of mental exhaustion/spiral.

For real though, Labuschagne needs a spell. Get the feeling he views himself as undroppable at present. Could sense Hazelwoods frustration in the press conference.

Bring Kurtis Patterson (or Renshaw or even Harris) in for a series. Guys who’ve done it at test level and bat top order. Let McSweeney bat down the order instead of facing Bumrah opening up in spite of the fact McSweeneys not a FC opener. Picking McSweeney as an opener was just clown stuff

Has Australia ever had a #3 and #4 in this bad a form at exactly the same time? Here are the last 10 innings for Labuschagne and Smith

Marnus: 10, 1*, 3, 5, 1, 2, 90, 6, 2, 3
Smith: 12, 11*, 6, 91*, 31, 0, 11, 9, 0, 17

I understand carrying one of these bats due to credit in the bank, but Australia can't afford to carry both. No wonder Australia lately are always 4 down for bugger all

2018 and some point in the 80s I'm guessing

TBF the other two are more down to the smith+warner ban's and WSC, right? This is just two test quality batsmen losing form at the same time. Marnus is particularly worrying for me given he's still making runs at FC level and based on age should be hitting his batting peak right now. Even when he was getting dropped he wac consistently getting to 30-40 before getting dropped and making 70-100+ from the drop. Now he can't get into double figures.

will it's sad day because Labuschagne isn't getting dropped as we don't have any depth currently. The 2 test was New Zealand was extremely hard conditions, the one test against West Indies had ATG individual bowling performance, India has future Goat bowler!. All hard situations, for Labuschagne any batsman including Smith or Root.

In fact Kohli recently form before the 💯 was something like 1, 70, 17, 1 3,4.

The batting standards worldwide has declined recently don't know why single out Labuschagne for then every else in Australia team is also struggling to.

Do you honestly think Harris can do any better we already seen he can't do anything against international bowlers of high quality. Sam Is good option but he's to young.
This was in turning conditions against an sla though (which is his weakness).

Say what you like about Warner, however here are batting averages without him giving Australia a start (could also say since they decided they don't need a specialist opener)

The fact that Lyon and Hazlewood average more than Labuschagne is pretty damning

I mean Warner and Khawaja weren't specialist openers either tbf.

But I do think there's something to the fact that a lot of our great batting at home has come off the back of an aggressive opener taking the initiative. Before Warner there was Hayden, then before Hayden there was Slater. I don't think it's entirely a coincidence that the gap between Hayden's retirement and Warner's debut our batting looked kind of weak.

That said, I don't know who can come in unless you move someone up or take an extreme risk on a Maddinson.

So the dearth of quality batting options in Australia, what is it put down to? End of a generation and not a lot of talent being exposed during this time? Coaching? Decrease in the quality of the Shield?

Yeah. Test cricket is going the way of vinyl.

Certain older fans might like it but there is no money in it (especially compared to other sports)

T20 cricket with an expanded 4-5 month IPL with 20-30 teams is the future (maybe 20-30 years from now) but it's coming.

IPL has now gone to Mid March to May end which is 2.5 months. First edition was from Mid April to end May (1.5 months).

Will be starting from mid Feb in 15 years and then mid Jan in another 15 (again this is a conservative estimate). Top players will prolly make 40-50 mil USD (in 2024 money)
