England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

I actually can't believe this was nearly 17 years ago.

I was at every day of this Test, apart from day 5 when I figured it wasn't worth watching us try to haul in 500. So completely missed Southee's blitzkrieg. Tim had made NZ U19 runs and was batting top 4-5 for King's College, so to think 17 years later he'd be averaging 15 (and even that seems generous) was unthinkable.

Did Flem actually say he couldn't imagine a world where Tommy Martin and King Mills were better bowlers than Jimmy Anderson and Harmison?

Flem: Anderson is awful on a non greentop whereas Mills, whilst not super quick, can bowl on most surfaces, has more accuracy and is just heaps better than James Anderson. Now yes I'm an NZ fan but if you think James Andersons one hit wonder 5-fer at Wellington was better than Mills' consistently good performances including one spell of 4/7 which was a match winner and put England out of the game then...well, its just not right. You need more than pace to succeed.

Love you Flem, and I agree that the 660 wickets that separate Jimmy from Kyle are largely irrelevant.

That's a fair and accurate assessment of Clouderson, tbf.

One player went on to be a wonderful bowler with many fantastic performances around the world, and the other became the battleground for English and Australian posters to discuss for over a decade.

Is Nathan Smith most effective with the new ball? How do they fit him in with Southee and Henry unless they do a bowler change after 6 overs?

He definitely is the most effective with a new ball - he swings it both ways at a good clip. Although I did hear/read someone saying he'd made a concerted effort to be better with the older ball with a view that it would help him at the selection table. He's a really fit guy, who they think could perform a Wagner role if required - although that's not something I'd want to be doing too much to someone with Smith's skill.

Duffy might be the more effective 4th seamer, if it flattens out, but with Smith's superior batting I think he plays at Hagley.

Was kinda hoping that Matty Fisher's spell with the old ball to knock over the Canterbury middle-order on a flat Hagley deck might've caught Tom's eye and lead to a surprise callup into the squad. Sadly not only was Fisher's name not included (always a long shot admittedly), he's not even playing for ND this week. :/

Seeing how well Santner’s been bowling (admittedly on helpful surfaces) in Sri Lanka, he’s definitely worth a shot against the Bazballers. I suppose Henry, Southee, O’Rourke are a lock in for now with Santner and Smith vying for that 4th bowling spot.

Santner isn't actually in the squad for the first Test, he's joining from the second Test onwards.

ugh, southee should be nowhere near the squad...but since its his farewell tour he's gonna play at least 2 tests.....thought selections were based on merit and not the feelz

Martin Guptill is someone who would have really benefited from Bazball, as opposed to thinking he needed to take technique lessons from Martin Crowe.
Yes the Bazball version of Guptill would not be dissimilar to Zac Crawley who looks 100 times better when given the licence to express himself with a positive mindset. Both look like a million dollars when on song with their ability to hit through the line with their extra long reach.
