England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

The team I'd like to see us play:

Latham, Conway, KW, Rachin, Mitchell, Phillips, Hay/Chu/Cleaver, Santner, Smith, Henry, O'Rourke

My support for Santner is not just based on the Pune test. I actually think he could be a really handy option against the bazballers.

The team I expect we'll see

Latham, Conway, KW, Rachin, Mitchell, Blundell, Phillips, Henry, Southee, Duffy, O'Rourke
I honestly don’t mind Blundell continuing for the time being, if he finds is mojo back in familiar conditions he’s still a good enough contributor. NZ can utilise white ball games to identify their preferred replacement (though would be typical if Latham took the gloves there). With so many tests in Asia in the last 12 months a smarter coach would have given him a break and tried someone else in the lead up, but that’s done now.

What I definitely agree on is Phillips moving up to 6 and coming out where he’s in a position to build an innings. He needs to evolve as a batsman, which won’t happen as long as he us reduced to playing cameos down the order.

It's a very tough series to call in terms of who has momentum. England were right in the early peak of BazBall when they last came here, while NZ were starting to trend down. Really, England dominated the series but managed to **** it up.

This time, BazBall looks a bit wobbly, while NZ are coming off an almost inexplicable upturn in form against a wider backdrop of a prolonged malaise/slump. Who tf knows where either side are at, really.
Not just Bazball from a batting POV. We are going there this time with an attack in transition. That's not easy with a different (and generally less bowler-friendly) ball and you guys often give us quite flat pitches.

I can see our top 3 having a rough time. Our 4-7 really need to deliver. Cox at present looks a major downgrade on Smith and while the conditions with the bat favour Stokes a lot more than his previous tour, he's been inconsistent at best ever since his 2021/22 return. His head might still be all over the place after his house got robbed while he was abroad. I hope not as we really need a proper performance from him in this series.

I'm looking forward to the series a lot for a number of reasons though. That and the BGT.

I’m no groundsman or curator, in fact I don’t even mow the lawn…but I keep hearing that it’s effectively impossible to prepare a turner at Hagley in November
Fair enough. From what I recall, Hagley is a place where there can be day 1 help for the seamers and then it becomes a road. I presume soil types matter a lot for determining how easy it is to prepare a turner. I don't have any such thing resembling a lawn, but then again I live in an apartment block!

The big problem is that they tend to leave so much grass on the pitch that it just doesn't break up. Good bounce at Hagley though, so the new ball tends to be a threat right throughout the match

Test squad announced today. The Post seems to think Foulkes is an outside chance for the squad.
Interesting. I assume they will name 5 seamers in the squad, with potentially 4 in starting 11.

I'd have Foulkes in the best 5 seamers, myself.

But I suspect the selectors would have him 6th currently (behind Duffy). So, I don't think he'll be in the squad, but it would be interesting to see if The Post do have good source.

Southee retiring after Hamilton test.

Team News | New Zealand cricket great Tim Southee plans to finish his Test career at his home ground of Seddon Park in Hamilton against England this December.

The BLACKCAPS all-time leading international wicket-taker (770) confirmed the marque three-Test series against England would be his last for New Zealand, unless the side qualified for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final next June - for which he’d make himself available.

Following the England series, Southee will make a decision on whether he has one final BLACKCAPS white-ball swansong against Sri Lanka after Christmas.

I'd say the end of the peak. Been pretty much downhill since you won that second game from the jaws of defeat.

I actually feel like I can sit back and enjoy the final days of his career now, especially after his epic knock in the first Test in India
That Test was fantastic in the way it allowed me to get back behind him for at least 5 minutes. He came out and batted with purpose before unleashing his usual method. I just wonder how many more runs he'd have scored in his career if he'd taken that approach more often. Do you think he'll play all 3 Tests?

Gonna go out on a high note - forget wickets and keeping that 29.88 career average under 30, Timmeh will finally eclipse his debut 77* against England in his final test against England. yhihf
He has possibly 3 tests to become the 1st (and probably only) player to get the 400 wicket/100 6s double.

Jadeja (319 wickets & 68 6s) might be a chance

I absolutely feel the same way. Shame it came so late but we all know he's done his best work when in the gun selection wise.

Yep I do think he'll play all 3. If Sears wasn't injured I wouldn't be sure, but he's definitely in their best 3 seamers who will all play before Xmas. It's whether they go Smith or Duffy as back up, and/or Santner in the XI
