KP over Kane and Pujara etc but not definitely not Kohli and Root
Wow.

Pietersen didn't play long enough for that. I don't think he'd have declined this bad but we don't know for sure and Kohli had a much better peak.
Well yeah Kohli’s been playing tests since he was 22 and he’s 36 now. Pietersen was 33 when he retired, and 25 when he started for England. Just checked and Kohli would have had an average of about 52 for that timeframe.

Greenidge opened, averaged 50 at the end of his peak and had a very long career. Greenidge v Kohli might become debatable if Kohli just keeps sinking.
I would argue that the last year or so of Pietersen's career, he was in marked decline. I don't think he ever really recovered from his injury sustained on the NZ tour. So his removal from the test team, might have done him a bit of a favour, because a guy who wasn't particularly consistent from 2009 onwards may have declined further. It is fair enough to point out that Kohli had several years, when his best form eclipsed that of Pietersen's first 4-5 years, and had a longer & higher peak.
