India will not travel to Pakistan to play the Champions Trophy

Outdated competition, almost irrelevant. India should just skip. But because the financial viability of this competition rests on India playing, they will ensure India plays at any cost, which will 100% be at neutral venues like Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

I highly doubt the final would have to be moved out of Pakistan though, since India's always had a terrible record in UAE. They'd much rather play all their matches in SL or Ban but because of close proximity, it will only happen in UAE.

This is genuinely quite sad.

It’s very harsh for Pakistan to potentially not even be able to host their own semis and finals. They won’t even be playing at home against India. Other teams will have to fly to the UAE to play India.

Are we really at the point where a multi team tournament is no longer financially viable without India? Or is it just a lot less lucrative?

Has anyone published the Financial implications of India missing the tournament? That would paint a clearer picture

I think it'd be interesting to do a poll, something like:

(1) dont care, replace India with next in line Sri Lanka
(2) bend over backwards and let India control CT by dictating where they'll play
(3) let India play in UAE but semi final and final are forfeits if they don't play in Pakistan
(4) token 4th choice, bring in fan favourites West Indies to replace India

I'd vote (4) but (1) would be the right choice
You can dream whatever fantasy you want.
But in reality there will be no CT without enough money or profits. Cricket is being played for money first and foremost; rest is secondary.

Well, I don't think India should play. As simple as that. There are other cricket playing nations, anyone can take our place, but I find it difficult to think that the Final will move out of Pakistan.
India will play, or the tournament won’t go ahead, simple as, I don’t see any other scenario outside of India playing in Dubai. If that means the semis and final have to be moved there, so be it. Don’t get why Pakistan can go to India, but the reverse can’t happen, England have been to Pakistan twice without any incidents, I’m sure India will be very well looked after in Pakistan

India team isn't really likely to face any issues at all in Pakistan, but Pakistan coming to India or England going to Pakistan is the same as India going to Pakistan. It's not really for any security purposes, purely geopolitical.

India Pakistan are enemy nations. There is also a lack of trust. Ind-Pak are still fighting a proxy war, if you don't know, given the terror attacks happening every week in Kashmir.

This matter is way out of BCCI's hands too. In fact, the BCCI president visited Pakistan last year during the Asia Cup iirc. So even if BCCI wanted to send their team to Pakistan, there's no chance India would have allowed it for a high profile cricket team, regardless of degree of threat.

But India knew they'd be playing Champions Trophy in Pakistan since ICC announced in June 2021. Why now to say nope, not playing?

I don't mind India forfeiting. They should. However if they do that, everyone (every board including BCCI) loses a ton of money. So almost no cricket board wants India out. That's the problem

So why did it take them 3+ years to say no. Ridiculous, they don't want to play then replace them
This matter is not in the hands of BCCI really. They tried to talk a way out till now, but honestly, this was the likely outcome.

I assume the government took ages to eventually make a decision and block it.

Simple fact is, there are way too many variables beyond the control of whoever's guaranteeing security for this thing, especially as pertains to India. Has nothing to do with any other team touring Pak; nobody shares the relationship India does with them and you'd have to be naive to think the visit wouldn't arouse unwanted interest among certain groups. Read between the lines. And for what? A stupid ****ing game? Screw that. Let Nepal take our place.

BCCI have said from the beginning that only 'if' they get approval from govt can they send the team. They waited till now because govts don't decide on these things like 8 months in advance.

ICC was already prepared for this scenario from the beginning. They prepared 3 seperate budgets. One with all CT matches in Pakistan. Two with hydrid model. Three with the whole CT taken outside Pakistan. ICC has been ready. Still think final should remain in Pakistan. And India probably won't make it anyway.

As I understand it, the tv rights for ICC events are sold as a bloc for several tournaments at a time, some years ahead of the events in question. Consequently there should not be a direct loss to the ICC for going ahead without India, especially as, for the Champions Trophy, India’s participation cannot be 100% guaranteed.

Broadcasters would doubtless suffer losses if India did not participate, and their future relations with the ICC would be damaged. However I do not see that the ICC themselves would incur a direct loss, unless I have misunderstood how the contracts work.

It may had been a clause though, that say India not playing (which was really very predictable) will let the broadcasters pay 40% less on CT rights. I mean, those deals are complex and I can't see broadcasters missing this.
