Greatest XI for your County/State

At a stab for Otago - due to the switching and changing in NZ domestic cricket, some of these guys only had a season or two for Otago but it'll do me..:

Glenn Turner
Mark RIchardson
Roger Blunt
Bert Sutcliffe
Ken Rutherford
Brendon McCullum
Warren Lees
Lance Cairns
Neil Mallender (token Pom)
Alexander Downes/John Bracewell
Stephen Boock/Jack Alabaster

Bit light in the bowling department, perhaps, and heavy on the spinners, but how about a 12th man with the golden arm, Jeff Wilson...

Probably a little generational bias and Les Ames playing purely as a batsman and one or two selections based on fame as opposed to performance.

1. Wally Hardinge
2. Brian Luckhurst
3. Colin Cowdrey (capt)
4. Frank Woolley
5. Les Ames
6. Percy Chapman
7. Alan Knott (wkt)
8. Alfred Mynn
9. Arthur Fielder
10. Derek Underwood
11. Colin Blythe

I recon the QLD team would be able to stand up to the NSW team, but for the lack of a spinner (and the Don).

QLD Test side:

Matthew Hayden
Bill Brown
Greg Chappell
Keppler Wessels
Allan Border (c)
Ken Mackay
Ian Healy
Ray Lindwall
Jeff Thomson
Craig McDermott
Carl Rackermann

QLD ODI side:

Matthew Hayden
Bill Brown
Greg Chappell
Keppler Wessels
Allan Border (c)
Andrew Symonds
Ian Healy
Ray Lindwall
Jeff Thomson
Craig McDermott
Peter Taylor (my favourite player until Warne showed up)

Unlucky to miss out:

Don Tallon
Ron Archer
Michael Kasprowitz
Andrew Bichel
Sam Trimble
Stuart Law

How bout this Canterbury side...not too shabby. All these players represented the province for a number of years.

John Wright
Graham Dowling
Stephen Fleming
Nathan Astle
Craig McMillan
Chris Harris
Chris Cairns
Brendon McCullum
Richard Hadlee
Shane Bond
Stephen Boock

Depth in batting, depth in bowling.

Canberra Comets
1 David Dawson - Had scored FC centuries for Tasmania, always dominated the second XI comp when he played with us.
2 Mike Veletta - First captain when we joined the OD comp, had a good FC career and played some cricket for Aus before coming to us.
3 Peter Solway - Was unfortunate that we joined the OD comp at the end of his career, one of the best bats ever to come from Canberra
4 Chris Adams - Played a few games for us in the 98 season, has 48 FC centuries in England and has played 5 tests
5 Rod Tucker - Our captain when we left the OD comp, played a lot of state cricket for NSW and Tasmania
6 Brad Haddin+ - Current Australian WK, was first noticed scoring a century against the Vics for us in a One dayer
7 Mark Higgs - played a tour match for Aus, had a decent FC career with NSW and SA
8 Greg Irvine - never played FC cricket but is regarded as the ACT's best ever player
9 Merv Hughes - was huge for us when we came into the domestic comp, obviously played a lot for Aus
10 Lea Hansen - Played for Australia A while with the Comets, big achievement for him. Was one of the leading wicket takers in 2000.
11 Anthony Stuart - Played a handful of games for us after his small stint in the Aussie OD side.

12th Man: Cade Brown - couldnt fit him in the top 11, but he is one of the best bats in canberra history, had a long career in the 2nd xi comp with us, should have played FC cricket.
13th Man: Michael Bevan - Is from Canberra but moved on while in his late teens so I decided not to pick him.

Maybe Barbados might give us a run.
Bit much selecting Gilchrist imo, especially when it was WA where he played the majority of his FC career.

Yeah yeah I know, mid asf teams. Kinda hard on Shahbaz Ahmed given he averages 44 with the bat and 22 with ball. Another unlucky player is Pragyan Ojha. We do have a number of good keepers, Saba Karim, Deep Dasgupta, Saradindu Banerjee, Srivats Goswami, Abhishek Porel, etc.

Based on State of Origin rules:

1. Victor Trumper
2. Bob Simpson
3. Don Bradman
4. Steve Smith
5. Allan Border
6. Steve Waugh
7. Adam Gilchrist
8. Alan Davidson
9. Ray Lindwall
10. Bill O'Reilly
11. Glenn McGrath

Obviously a couple of those are kind of questionable. If you ruled Border a Queenslander and Gilchrist a WAussie, put Miller (who played most of his Shield career with NSW despite being a Vic) and Oldfield in.

2nd XI might be:

1. David Warner
2. Arthur Morris
3. Charles Maccartney
4. Stan McCabe
5. Michael Clarke
6. Doug Walters
7. Richie Benaud
8. Bert Oldfield
9. Pat Cummins
10. Fred Spofforth
11. Josh Hazlewood

3rd XI:

1. Michael Slater
2. Mark Taylor
3. Usman Khawaja
4. Norm O'Neill
5. Mark Waugh
6. Monty Noble
7. Brad Haddin
8. Mitchell Starc
9. Geoff Lawson
10. Charlie Turner
11. Nathan Lyon

A large state like West Bengal where the capital of British India was once located (which bestowed it with a great cricketing culture) should really be producing more international class cricketers. Many of them like Shami were in fact imports in West Bengal team from other states.

We really should, though I think there are a couple of factors. I think the most important being, football is largely the most popular sport here and we pretty much are the Mumbai of Football. It's only in the last 15-20 years that cricket has overtaken/giving football a run for its money. Heck, Chuni Goswami is in the 2nd team and he came to cricket after retiring from football as India's GoAT (arguably). Another reason I think is East Zone is quite weak. And the 3rd, we relatively just sucked. And well, some players should had played more for India.

Was bored and wanted to avoid doing some work so tried to make an alll time Hampshire side. This was generally based on performance for the county itself rather than overall reputation. Have not taken into account overseas restrictions, just wanted to get the best side possible.

All time XI

1. Barry Richards 15607 runs @ 50.50
2. Gordon Greenidge 19840 runs @ 45.40
3. Robin Smith 18984 runs @ 42.09
4. Phil Mead 48892!! runs @ 48.84
5. Charles Fry 3829 runs @ 58.90
6. Nic Pothas (wk) 5899 runs @ 44.68
7.Peter Sainsbury 19576 runs @ 27.03, 1245 wickets @ 24.14
8. Shane Warne (c) 2040 runs @ 25.50, 276 wickets @ 25.58
9. Malcolm Marshall 5847 runs @ 25.20, 826 wickets @ 18.64
10.Alex Kennedy 14925 runs @ 18.51, 2549 wickets @ 21.16
11.D. Shackleton 8602 runs @ 14.43, 2669 wickets @ 18.23

12th man. Andy Roberts (really should be in the side averaged 16 for Hampshire)

Pretty good side that with one of the greatest opening parterships of all time and two of the best bowlers of all time.

What is your county or states best side ever?
Gauteng/Transvaal

1.Barry Richards
2.Graeme Smith
3.Jimmy Cook

5.Eddie Barlow
6.Aubrey Faulkner
7.Jock Cameron (WK)

Interesting. WB was always home to India's most prestigious stadium though. And cricket's popularity in the state never seemed to be any lower than in other states.
