Also, if they want to prolong their careers, get these guys playing Ranji cricket. If Kohli, Rahul etc want to make a comeback grind it out in domestic cricket. How the hell has Sachin played a Ranji game more recently than Kohli with his downfall in form since 2020
JFC, is that last factoid for real?

Whatever it takes!!!
Sachin played a Ranji game after his retirement in 2013. I think Virat was by then a regular and even vice-captain, so he was not playing any Ranji at all. Not sure if Rohit played any Ranji since, either.

Look, I hate Gambhir and his bias and arrogance as much as the next guy but when folks like Ashwin say how good he is tactically etc. then maybe there is still hope and he can be another Shastri for us. He just needs to tune his mindset to that of being a coach which comes with certain responsibilities in terms of what you say but even in terms of how you think of certain players. I think he is too early in his stint to attribute either success or failure directly to him. He does have a refreshingly aggressive outlook on how cricket should be played but it needs to be married to the reality when defensive cricket can be equally important and effective in certain situations. If you recall, Virat, who has been our best test captain in my time of watching cricket, started his era by selecting Karn ****ing Sharma ahead of Ashwin. The really aggressive ones take their time to learn their lessons, I hope GG does too.

The real worry is Rohit and Virat's form IMO. Ashwin and Jaddu were trying way too hard with the ball both tests because they felt it was their responsibility to get India back into the game after the collapses. I wont read too much into their bowling just as yet. Think the entire team was shell shocked by the 46 all out and everything since then has been an over-reaction to a known weakness. Unfortunately that call to bat first and play 3 spinners on that track seems to have ensured the management made bad decisions continuously. Even in this test the idea to bring in Washy was definitely good but maybe in hindsight we could have played Kuldeep (assuming he was fit) for Akashdeep.

More than anything else, what the team needs right now are some calm heads working together behind the scenes and trying to enable the team to play their best cricket in the next test. I dunno what changes from the outside will suddenly make this side better because the two worst batsmen right now are the ones we cannot drop in the middle of such a big reason, and in the case of Virat, there isn't anyone knocking the door down for a test MO spot anyways. They need good batting tracks which is where we have done best even in the past coz our ATG spinners will find a way to get wickets in any conditions and there is always Bumrah. It is how we beat England which coincidentally is the only home series since the pandemic when our top 4 have made consistent contributions. I think they expected Bangalore to be a batting track and the rains and overhead made it a homegame for NZ. And the resulting panic has ensured we had a turner and we lost. But it was still a good pitch inspite of being a turner just that our batsmen have become completely incapable of milking the spinners and our captain made it the easiest thing in the world for their batsmen to milk ours. It just shows the wounds from the toss at Bangalore are that deep. Our only hope to do well in Mumbai, and it will be another result wicket, is for them to somehow come out of that and take it as a fresh game. I hope they do but yeah, this is very much another 8-0 on the cards and far worse than anything MSD did.

Remember when sunilz and co. were adamant Rohit was a better captain than MSD, leave alone Virat?

even if we get swept here and in Aus, I don't think it's worse than 0-8 and losing to England at home shortly after.

but in anycase that wasn't even MSD's fault tbh, just results of a side that got complacent after success (2011 WC, reaching no.1 in the test rankings), our one good bowler getting injured and some key players on the wane. there was really nothing he could've done to stop that.

India fans should stay out of the 3rd Test thread entirely and let Kiwibros enjoy their usual overanalyses in peace. Imagine microcommenting and cheering on a 1 - 2 series outcome at home

Indian cricket will be fine. They have plentiful reserves coming up, this is just a matter of batting transition.
Well, agreed Indian cricket will be fine.

However I think scope of required changes can be bigger than just batting.

The old firm of Ashwin and Jadeja being disappointing compared to their usual ATG home level was a big part of these last 2 losses.

Yeah but even Bumrah had a bad test. Highly unlikely both spinners fade simultaneously.

No it was post that and I think there was a series in between that when we won. And honestly, that series defeat seems innocuous compared to this pummelling if this ends up 3-0.
Those felt worse to me. We were getting smashed every game. Lots of innings defeats in there. A clean sweep by NZ here would be terrible but Aus would need to wipe the floor with us for it to be worse.

No, I meant the home series loss to England. We had the freak KP innings in Mumbai and were outplayed in Kolkata, but we beat them well in Ahmedabad and honestly, it was a bit unlucky for both sides that the Nagpur pitch was so docile. This NZ win in India seems far worse if it ends up, as it likely will, 3-0.

Nah this series loss totally pales in comparison to the series loss in 2012.

2012 was the worst possible defeat IMO. Losing to England of all teams at home, after having been whitewashed 4-0 away to them the year before in 2011 as the no.1 ranked test side and wc winning side. Losing away like that was torture, but then there was hope that India would make amends at home in 2012. Winning the first test only to lose so badly from there onwards, it was unimaginable shock and horror. English spinners completely outbowled the Indian spinners, although DRS would have helped as Cook survived massive LBW appeals. Then to get such a horrible track for the final test was the nail in the coffin, India didn't even get a proper chance to save the series 2-2 after going down 1-2. It felt like we were totally robbed by the conditions in the last test, to not even get an 'opportunity' to salvage the series. It was the worst way to lose.

This, on the other hand, is a 3 test series and one test has been played in conditions closer to those in NZ. So it's not as bad as getting outclassed by Swann and Panesar and never hearing the end of it. But if India do lose 3-0, this series defeat will start to feel a lot worse. What has happened before matters a lot as well. India has been winning, so losing 1 series where luck has played a part is forgivable, though if India lose 3-0 and then get annihilated in Australia 4-0 and 4-1 in England, then this phase will be just as bad as 2011-2012. Right now it is just 2 defeats, compared to 10 defeats in 2011-2012, including 6 test defeats to England.

This series defeat could end up being the catalyst for better performances ahead or the start of a terrible phase. If it is the former, then this series defeat won't hurt because the streak had to end sooner or later and better it ended against NZ than Aus/Eng. If India can win a series in either Aus or Eng, then this defeat could partly be driving factor. Now the likes of Kohli, Rohit, Jadeja and Ashwin know that it's do or die for them and if they lose badly, their careers will end.

Rohit - past it and gives up easily as captain - useless
Jaiswal - iffy against movement and bounce - useless
Gill - Golden boy, has it too easy, doesn't work hard - useless
Virat - past it and moved out of India, doesn't play enough - useless
Pant - very chancey, never gonna be consistent - average, at best
Sarfraz - iffy against movement and bounce - useless
Rahul - useless
Jaddu - past it - useless
Ashwin - past it - useless
Washy - cant win games on his own, needs support - useless
Siraj - lost pace - useless
Akashdeep - skiddy bowler - useless in Aus
Bumrah - overworked - average, at best
Prasidh - always injured - useless
NKR - unproven, iffy against movement and pace, cant bowl more than 130 - useless

We can just feel the 5-0 and overall 8-0 loading. Its gonna be Aus Vs RSA at Lords for the WTC finals. :( I wish we can at least poop on the Oz parade and make it a SA Vs SL final at Lords. But we wont. :(
