I have noticed a trend in world cricket that teams do better without their best test batter.

Pakistan dropped Babar and won their first test series at home in 4 years

New Zealand played without Kane and won a away test series in India. Their greatest cricket achievement ever

Kohli left indian team down 0-1 in 2021 BGT. India won the series. Their greatest achievement in test cricket

Australia won their first series in Asia after 8 years in 2019 when they defeated Srilanka away without smith They lost 3-0 when smith played in Srilanka in 2016.

Not playing your best batsman means other batsman have no choice but to step up.

Should England get ahead of the curve and surprise the aussies by dropping Joe root?

It didn't. The last series in SL was in 2022, Smith played, and it was drawn. The 2019 series was in Australia.
