Having said that, Norris was ****ing brain-dead during the incident. You're never going to get away with a pass the way Norris did.

If he'd fallen in behind Verstappen and tried again, Max probably takes the penalty for forcing someone off track.

I was thinking at the time, with 4 laps still to run, I'd back Norris to get him at turn 12 again if he gave the place back.

But hindsight is 20/20 etc

Not sure, Verstappen’s defense was pretty intense.

But yeah heard him on the radio saying why didn’t we give the position back then. Unless the team was confident they wouldn’t get a penalty or confident they could pull the gap it was a silly move.

Bottas is significantly alongside Russell and is entitled to be left space on the outside.

Verstappen should have been penalised given he failed to make the corner.

Apparently according to new driving standards that have been in effect this season which don’t state that the car being overtaken has to make the corner - not 100% on this because the new guidelines (agreed upon by teams and drivers) have not actually been published yet and are still in draft form.

Also important re: those two specific incidents is Russell is the overtaking driver and Max is the defending driver.

I hope everybody starts defending like Max then. Maybe when 3/4 of each race is behind a safety car the FIA might get it….

The new driving standards are a joke, because you can "win" a corner by outbraking yourself so you're ahead at the apex (as Max did).
Just gotta predict it so he goes off and you don’t and he gets the gain advantage penalty or you pass him after that.

Skill issue.

Exactly. Then you're entitled by the regulations to open your steering wheel and run the overtaking driver out of road. Particularly effective on the more modern tracks where the run offs are tarmacked, rather than the more traditional gravel traps.

Yeah I don’t agree with the rule just explaining it. Seems weird the teams and drivers all signed off on it. Guess that’s how they wanna race.

Gravel traps would do more in less than a second than a week of writing rules.

Yeah yeah cars are too fast - maybe we can go a touch slower for better sport. Especially when modern F1 circuits are basically mega carparks with a painted squiggly line through it.

Apparently there could be further changes by Qatar.

During the meeting, the drivers outlined their positions on what Verstappen has been doing, with some siding strongly with Norris's point of view – expressed post-race in Austin and again on the Mexico media day that he was "no longer the attacking car, [Verstappen] was" – while others felt Verstappen's tactics were hard but fair within the rules as they are currently written.

Also yes Bottas has so much Aussie energy.

Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas said on Thursday in Mexico that "some drivers are pushing the limits of the regulations more and almost like kind of taking the piss out of it".
