I have not followed this thread so don't know but just wondering could Kumble have been a captain instead of MSD in Tests? MSD's captaincy is not rated highly in Tests.

He could have been but I'd prefer Dhoni. His captaincy in tests is overly criticized imo. He was a good and proactive captain tactically with field settings, bowling changes etc. Ofc, the transition period post 2011 was tough and Dhoni could have done better himself at certain points but I'd take him over most others. People forget that we actually became the test no 1 side under Dhoni for the first time in our history and beat NZ in NZ and drew against prime SA in SA. Also whitewashed Aus 4-0 at home
