They both have 4-year peaks compared to 5, or you end up including a year of mid-career meh for Root or a year of being banned for Smith.
In general Smith's 2014-2017 is untouchable. Absolutely ridiculous average and consistency of tonning up which we probably haven't seen from any modern player, hence his holding of the 2nd best rating ever to Bradman according to the ICC player rankings.

When comparing him to Root, you could make some contextual points of:
- Root is the 2nd highest scorer in this period as well as smashing all comers in the last 4 years. Root actually averaged only 1 run less during this run as he's doing for his purple patch. You can't say the reverse is true.
- This period for Australians especially featured some super-high scoring wickets and friendly touring attacks so Aussie batting averages pretty much soared as a whole. This includes 'the Voges years' after all. Root's current 4 years includes a set of carrying the team pretty hard for 18 months and generally scoring twice as much as anyone else.
