Joe Root is number one

Norwood's on Fire
Haha all g.

Cook had 3 consecutive matches with tons leading up to Root’s debut in that series. Impressive stuff.
Looking at the list again - the mad thing is. When Cook equalled the record, KP moved to 21. Obviously KP is a good few years older than Cook but there was 8 months between their debuts so you could have foreseen them swapping the record back and forth for a few years to come, and yet KP scored just one more while Cook added another 13.

It's a good time to revisit that question...do you prefer;
chunk of 60 then chunk of 40, or
Chunk of 40 then chunk of 60.

It's now even more clear to me the later is superior. With the first, while the first part is exhilarating, the second part is a horror show in comparison to the start, while the second you are in heaven for the remainder and the first part was not a horror show but just a minor disappointment.

How does roots best 5 years compare with smiths best 5?
They both have 4-year peaks compared to 5, or you end up including a year of mid-career meh for Root or a year of being banned for Smith.

In general Smith's 2014-2017 is untouchable. Absolutely ridiculous average and consistency of tonning up which we probably haven't seen from any modern player, hence his holding of the 2nd best rating ever to Bradman according to the ICC player rankings.

When comparing him to Root, you could make some contextual points of:

- Root is the 2nd highest scorer in this period as well as smashing all comers in the last 4 years. Root actually averaged only 1 run less during this run as he's doing for his purple patch. You can't say the reverse is true.
- This period for Australians especially featured some super-high scoring wickets and friendly touring attacks so Aussie batting averages pretty much soared as a whole. This includes 'the Voges years' after all. Root's current 4 years includes a set of carrying the team pretty hard for 18 months and generally scoring twice as much as anyone else.

SRT made 20 centuries after turning 30 (160 innings), Root has 18 so far in 91 innings.

Useless stat but quite interesting I thought.
Top of the list is Hayden with 27.

Root (18 in 91 innings) is scoring them at a faster rate than anyone except Williamson (11 in 40 innings) though. And of course Don (8 in 23) and a couple of blokes post WWI - Macartney (6 in 21) and Russell (5 in 18)

He didn't have any in the last 25-odd Tests he played if I recall. Even then Root's been on some stat-correcting tear these last few years. Seemed chronically incapable of converting for so long.
I just looked it up and he didn't get any in his last 40 innings, it was a very anticlimactic ending to a great career. Root's conversion rate since turning 30 (18 tons and15 fifties) has been very impressive considering his struggles before that.

Most batters would be very happy hitting 27 century's in their career but to get 27 after turning 30 is pretty spectacular.

Since turning 30 Kohli has 5 in 71 and 9 in 78 for Steve Smith, you would never of guessed Root would've hit more centuries in fewer innings than those 2 combined a few years ago.

so what is the reason? is there an obvious change in technique? did he shelve a shot that he was often getting out to? has he changed his breakfast regime? what?

I think there is a very subtle technique change, I think he makes use of his wrist more and plays a bit earlier than he used to, but mostly his mental approach has changed a lot.

From memory the most noticeable change is his interception point vs pace bowling being far closer to the ball because he's using his feet to the pacers more and playing them on the front foot more often. No idea if that's actually a causative mechanism but it's a noticeable difference between pre and post covid root.

I think prioritising Test cricket. Doesn't play as many white ball matches as he used to and perhaps that has ironed out his game.

2013-2019 - 143 ODI matches, 32 T20's
2020-Present - 28 ODI's , 0 T20's

Smith a league of his own, hope Root has a monster ashes down under and Smith has had in England.
