at some point got to give Sears a go too, pointless sending him to sit on the bench for 5 tests,

Asked about Southee’s place in the selection picture, Latham referenced the fact that “he took seven wickets (in one innings)” in Bengaluru “the last time we toured there as a test team,” which sounds impressive until you realise that was 12 years ago – almost two years before Latham, now a seasoned veteran, even made his debut.

Where were you 12 years ago, people?
Ha ha, was in a near-entry level job then and watched this game in its entirety at the KSCA (had far too much free time then, amazingly wasn't on CW yet). The first in a long line of "Tim Southee comes up with a great performance when questions are asked about his place in the side" episodes (think he averaged something like 45 in tests with the ball till then). Did bowl quite brilliantly, the use of the scrambled seam to get Dhoni and Kohli was masterful.

Imo we should rest rohit in one game and give debut to abhimanyu eswaran so that as rohit is missing a game in aus eswaran as some international experience under belt it would be stupid to play make shift opener in bgt

Not a bad call. Easwaran has been around for way too long to never get a Test cap. I think he deserves atleast one.

Playing one at home is better then debuting in hostile conditions against atg attack of Australia
It is. But you don't get to choose really. Easwaran isn't going to challenge Jaiswal or Rohit for a spot, and there is a very long line of Sarfaraz, Jurel and Paddikal in the Middle order, so he better does grab the chance he gets with both hands.

A new opener in aus could really hurt our chances of lifting bgt

For one match?? I don't think he is going to do THAT much damage. Our other options include promoting one of Rahul/Gill to open, but then again, don't expect much from Sarfaraz in Australia.
Rohit is our best player against pace and bounce if he doesnt play in perth we need somebody decent against bounce otherwise would mean a batting collapse

Haha, that is a hallmark of Tim Southee's career.

Speaking of 2012, I was at the Test in Dunedin v SA - Southee took 0-40 off 10 and 0-100 off 25 (and a second ball duck), he genuinely looked like a club bowler. His run-up was ****ed, absolutely zero momentum through the crease. From memory, Allan Donald was our bowling coach and completely remodelled him to the point where Bengaluru was 3 innings' later.

His career from post Brisbane 2008 to 2012 was one big cruise mode, you'd like to think he regrets that period but I'm not sure he does

Sears isn't express but could crank it upto 90mph which is more than handy pace. Don't think he can reverse it though otherwise he can be devastating. Umesh Yadav has crazy numbers in India for a reason.
Sears actually reminds me a bit of early career Cummins. Slightly loose back-bending action which generates good pace and a natural away-swinger.
