He's doubled his overall century count from 17 to 35 in this last third of his career, a period roughly equal to 4 years and 50 Tests. That's some acceleration.

2018-2020: 4 hundreds in 60 inningsRoot turned the conversion corner in 2021.
He's McCartney to Stokes's Lennon, Brook's Harrison and Jack Leach's Ringo.Better than the rest of the fab 4 combined.

Few years ago I’d have believed he’d lead the Fab Four in runs. Not in tons.Been ‘stuck’ on 64 half-centuries for a while now has Rooty!

Close, Cook had just equalled and then taken the record in the previous two tests vs India.Bit of a random one I just noticed. I was 90% sure when I saw that country by country breakdown for Root on the numbers and statsguru backed me up but there was some manual counting involved so please keep me honest but…
When Root debuted the record number of Test centuries for England was 22 - Cook had, I believe, just equalled it
Root now has 21 just at home.
Not sure that really means anything in itself but it just kind of struck me as powerfull
As you were GIMH x
I knew he equalled it in that series. Went to innings by innings on cricinfo and clearly miscounted the equalling to be the second ton of the series not the first.Close, Cook had just equalled and then taken the record in the previous two tests vs India.
