Reckon there are at least 30 to 40 bowlers ahead of Beardman. That's a conservative estimate. Likewise don't think Dwarshuis would be in the top 10 after Starc/Cummins/Haze

If we had to pick a World Cup squad without those 3 my choices would be Bartlett, Ellis, Johnson, Richardson and Neser as a back up. Might have said Abbott before this series but he really didn't look great. Reckon he's done

Love watching Matt Short. Such a destructive player. I think if you give him an extended run at the top of the order he'll be a genuine gun in 12-18 months time

He's mercurial, but the potential upside is just too tempting imo

To be fair, there's not been a lot in it for the seamers in these matches. Potts actually emerges with real credit compared to all the others, and Carse proved he wasn't totally arse.

Very much borne out by the fact the best bowling averages in the series of those who took 3 wickets or more were Head, Labuschagne, Maxwell and Bethell!!

And something else I've been mentioning for a while, Rashid really doesn't take as many wickets as he used to

It was a flat pitch with short boundaries on the sides. No surprise that both Short and Salt looked ok on this, but I don't think either should really have International futures. Short was also badly dropped by Rashid (if it hadn't been windy I suspect he'd have caught it) before he'd got out of the 20's too. Jacks has probably moved ahead of Salt in the bid to open with Duckett when others are fit, although you could make a case for Buttler doing it and Smith staying in the team.

Not sure what we really learnt from this series. England still can't bat with common sense when they're going well, getting bowled out by part time spinners once is careless, twice is criminal. Bethell at 7 seemed a strange selection, was it the ECB trying to justify the Hundred? Curran would've been far more useful.

As for Aus, the concern for what comes after Starc/Hazlewood/Cummins remains. They're either brittle or not very good, but it seems a huge drop off in quality. Starc seemed to hardly care about this series anyway (not the only one), I guess saving himself for the BGT.

Tbf the number of fast bowling injuries accrued on what was otherwise a pretty short tour was kind of comical; there's depth and experience cocncerns for sure but this series wasn't really about that. We basically ran out of players on tour and very nearly picked a teenager who's played all of one game for his state (as opposed to what we actually did, which was pick a 20yo who's played one FC game as a batsman as a specialist spinner instead)

It’s weird because we have a long history of partnership breakers like Dougie Walters

Marsh has always come across as a bit of a jokey maverick, who doesn't take things too seriously, so maybe not that surprising.

I think we learned a fair bit, which is after all the point of these series. We need Root in the ODI side in the absence of anyone else who can drop anchor. True, but I think we learnt we should always have a 4th seamer. Although, that could yet be Stokes if he returns for the Champions Trophy.

To be honest, I'm not convinced by Salt in any format. He's still riding off those tons in the WI and hasn't done a whole lot since. I'd sooner see Buttler open with Jacks in T20 with Duckett at 3.

Tbh, I think both are below top class and get found out by high quality bowling. There were times in that series when Hazlewood made Salt look pretty ropey. It feels like the best you're going to get from Salt in a T20 is 20 off 10 before he skies or misses one.

I thought if Salt was in the Test team he wouldn't do well against Starc, Hazelwood and Cummins when I saw him playing and missing. Think he is more suited to T20s. Maybe if he spent more time with Lancs in the county championship he would improve his ODI batting.
