Rank these batsmen against high quality pace

lol@ Laxman and Clarke being so low. Laxman has two ATG innings (the 167 and 281) against prime McGrath where he was chance less and the 96 in Durban against prime Steyn.

did anyone other than Sachin play Steyn as well as Clarke?

Mark Waugh should be higher (5th or 6th). He threw a few innings away and never got any daddy 100s (hence the low average) but scored key centuries in big tests away against ATG attacks in the Windies and South Africa

Gooch was inferior to Greenidge in my opinion. Greenidge is among the very best vs pace while Gooch probably more balanced vs spin and pace. I don't think Greenidge played the quality of spin bowling like Gooch did in 90s but their record in 80s really clears any doubt on their game vs pace.
Gooch faced early Warne and....? In his debut series Gordon played and did well vs Chandra, Prasana etc. And he also did well vs Underwood in England. That's good enough for me.

Greenidge averaged 31.8 against Pakistan and 17 in Pakistan, the side who had the best fast bowlers of the era. Also 30 in Australia who had next best fast bowling attack.

On other hand Crowe averaged 43, 38 and 47 against Pak, WI and Aus. Younis Khan averaged 50.6 in Australia, 33 in SAF, and 50 in England.

You guys are way overrating Greenidge and way underrating Younis

Greenidge played only 6 matches in Pakistan, of which most of them are in 1990, way past his prime. Also it would be much more helpful if you provide exactly how much of those runs came against pace bowlers.

Younis’s technique against pace was very poor

If the average is low, the number of runs against pace don't matter much. He was cleaned up by Qadir couple of times, Mudasser Nazar once, otherwise it was Imran, Wasim or Waqar.

yeah, not sure how Greenidge is supposedly one of the greatest players of high quality pace bowling?

The only thing Greenidge is famous for (and rightly so) was that he would absolutely smash the ball when it was in his arc (off or leg). Few harder hitting batsmen were around in his time, and even later.

Even during his days Lloyd and Viv hit them harder, especially Lloyd. Then there was Richardson who bashed short balls. But there were plenty of fast bowlers who used long handle who hit the ball so it goes screaming to the boundary. Don't think any one hit it harder than Klusener or Afridi though. Jayasuriya is there and thereabout.

Greenidge was arguably the best player of lateral movement out of all of them.

Record in Australia and to an extent his record v Pakistan at the back end (albeit past his best then so not as big a deal) reduce his level a bit.

There is probably an argument for Clarke/Gower ahead of him in this list. Clarke's record home and away v SA; Gower's better record in Australia, doing well in WI, and having credentials v swing and seam himself. Mark Waugh, as has already been mentioned, is underrated when it comes to ability v quality attacks. He's got some very good performances and sound overall averages against West Indies, South Africa and Pakistan. He just wasn't a persistent run machine which holds him back as an overall player.

I gave Gordon big points for his record in England and New Zealand as an opener; if you built the best versions of quintessential English and New Zealand attacks; there aren't many men you'd want in your corner before Greenidge. But it seems relentless hit the deck attacks could get the better of him. It's pretty close between a lot of them.

Shame Crowe's only tour of WI came when he was 22. 1986 WI at home and 1990 away to Pakistan were his best series.

??

Crowe averaged 57 v Pakistan, 45 v WI, and 48 v Australia

You must've looked at his strike rates rather than averages.
I looked for away matches. Crowe must have been used to NZ and EnGlish conditions which are similar. His alien conditions were Aus, Pakistan and WI.

He was unfortunate to only tour WI when he was very young but can't completely assume he would succeed. Gower's match-saving hundred in Jamaica v Holding, Garner and Croft in their primes is one of his best. Did alright in his second tour too after the 1984 horror show.
