May have got lucky a bit today, but that’s England’s first daddy hundred since Pope’s own one in India, the first at home since Crawley went berserk at Old Trafford

After a rubbish first half hour Sri Lanka have looked legitamately good since. You can see the thinking behind trying to construct a seam and swing attack under the conditions. And the England batting order suddenly looks a bit short.

That said it might be very encouraging for the bowlers. You would back players like Woakes and Potts to do damage here, just need to keep their lines.

A few random thoughts.
I'm not convinced that Smith is really a test number 6 just yet.
Against a stronger attack, we wouldn't have made 150 in these conditions.
I fully expect Woakes to bag a hatful if conditions are the same when we bowl.

That is awful from Woakes when the set batsman needs someone to stay with him. Sri Lanka have bowled better this morning but England's batting has been a bit tame.

Hard to say what a ‘par’ score is for England considering they score more quickly but give away wickets cheaply. Sri Lanka bowled poorly yesterday, they’ll have a task on their hands to match what England end up with
Well the median 1st innings score after being put in to bat in England is 294, to give you a bit of a ballparker. It's about the same if you exclude pre-21st century tests.

Woakes has never quite decided whether he should bat like a proper batsman or lower-order chancer. I guess being in this team has pushed him towards the latter, but I always think he should play like the former. Such an underperformer.

He should definitely have looked to play the percentages there with the man at the other end on 150. Woakes isn't good v spin though. Good captaincy.

Especially when he's been pushed up the order to number 7

Big problem with Woakes's batting has always been how vulnerable he is to the short ball.

He's a really good player of spin technically though - rivals England's specialists IMO - so chipping a part timer to cover at home is pretty frustrating.
