Greenidge. He played tougher opponents more than Flower, just like how Root played tougher opponents more than Sangakkara.

Greenidge faced much better bowling attack and his average against varied opponent is quite balanced, unlike flower. Was Flower's wicket keeping good enough to make him a better cricketer than Greenidge?

Greenidge's work in England and New Zealand is immense. He averaged the same as Flower after the same length of time played with opening tax, and probably facing stronger bowling test by test.

Surprised to see Flower miles ahead of Greenidge as a batter in the DoG rankings.
In Wisden rankings however, Greenidge is a bit overrated, along with boycs, gooch, Lloyd.
Is there any updated Wisden list?

Fair enough, but also Kohli ahead of Smith. Guess that's because of 2 points difference in longevity.
Kohli has had much tougher home pitches than Smith which could explain that.

I don’t think it cares more about away average than home average which is usually why Smith is rated higher by most people I think.

I enjoyed reading the standardised averages exercise. Impossible for these things to be a perfect reflection but exceptional work and always fascinating. Looking forward to when Prince EWS has the time to update the Fab 4 etc.

Good point. Smith's then average of 61 drops down to an adjusted average of 55 for that reason. Away average should be given importance tho.

fwiw the linked spreadsheet continued to track until cricinfo changed something in statsguru I believe? Or maybe it was before that. That lists Smith with 65 matches (so one extra match, the first of the 2019 Ashes), and puts him at 41st. Where he was really lacking was longevity (the ban didn’t help with that), no doubt his adjusted average will also have fallen since then but his longevity will definitely have risen.

Until 2018, I would say Kohli vs Smith was actually quite debatable and Kohli had more great away series.

Regarding Greenidge vs Flower, I will go Flower, even as a batsman, considering the relative strength of their teams, which is a factor heavily downplayed sometimes. It's vastly different batting for the Greatest Team of All and a team you're the only bat averaging 30+; that too while wicketkeeping.
