I think Root is possibly better. Now before certain section of fans go after me, let's take a look at their stats excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Root averages 51 while Dravid averages 49. Both superb players of swing and seam bowling but not so good vs pace and bounce. Root is slightly better than Dravid vs spin. Root is also a naturally more aggressive batsman than Dravid with wider range of strokes.

Yup. It's definitely close.

Think Root is ahead in just about everything against Rahul, performed in a harder era, better stats minus minnows and has played for a fragile and dependant lineup while Dravid was playing in a very good lineup for most of his career, plus another dimension to his game.

Not as a player of seam.
do you use the classic Australia/SA performance method to dictate a player's ability to play seam bowling?

because bar averaging 100+ in the 2003-4 Australia series where both McGrath and Warnie were gone and the main australian bowler was averaging 37 with multiple batsmen averaging 50+, Dravid almost always failed against Australia and South Africa, a big hole in his record actually.

Let’s wait until careers are done. We have yet to see the Root decline phase, Remeber there was a period after 100 tests when Dravid was averaging high 50s. i rate both of them very highly and this is very close.

Dravid for now. Don’t think Root will end up with a record as good as Dravids but we’ll see in a few years.

Longevity is really underrated on here. Dravid was averaging high 50s with a 60+ away average around 2007

Dravid is better in handling lateral movement but not pace and bounce in SA/Aus.

I'm gonna go with Dravid for now but I think it's super close. If Root continues to perform above replacement for another couple of years then I'll change my vote for sure.
