***Official*** England vs Sri Lanka 21st August-10th September 2024

King Kane

International Regular
This is garbage, the light looks good enough to me, the umpires and players are just looking for an early knock off.

England are so far ahead that some more overs of spin is absolutely fine.
It was indeed a curious decision to go off. However Pope’s mind seems a little scrambled at present, considering his shot to the first ball after the field was set back for the bouncer.

A fair way to go yet (Karunaratne is still in, and there’s still a Test to come), but that can’t be too common for a series of 3 or more Tests
If that's still true after the third test it'll be a world second for a 3-test series, the first case being the 7th ever Ashes in England in 1888.

The only case of it happening in a 2-test series is those same presumably batting-light teams of the Ashes 18 months prior in Australia in '86/87 (not that one).

Other such cases are all one-off tests, most recently Ireland in Bangladesh last year.

Don’t think the seamers would have been very happy to see the ball scuffed up any more by the spinners!

In the 3rd test at Old Trafford, England batted first, were 172 all out, and then won by an innings.

Wisden:

" on Friday there was a good crowd present in the morning, and it is not too much to say that several thousands more were prepared to go up to the ground in the afternoon from Manchester and the surrounding towns, where the news of the collapse of the Colonial batting created a great deal of excitement. this result gave England the 'rubber', and was received with extreme satisfaction throughout the country. "

Yeah I would have experienced some extreme satisfaction too

Here's a list of the worst series for top-three batsmen of 3 tests or more.

The current lot's effort of 14.60 runs per wicket would put put them second in the list if things don't improve, again after the 1888 top threes, who managed to average 8.16.

The bottom three in 1888 did a lot better, with players batting at 9-11 notching up one half century and an average of just under 11.

That's also true of this year, where Rathnayake's half century leads a batting average of 16.16 from the collective tailenders.

For context, the batting surfaces have been much better this year, and the two matches have already gone to a fourth innings!

Some of the shots played at the other end while Root batting were truly terrible. After his wonderful 100 in the 1st, Gus got out to some crazy reverse tennis smash, i know they were in a hurry, but could they not have just pushed the singles to give root the strike?

since start of 2021

Root 48test, 88 innings, 8 no, 4554 runs, av 56.92, 17x100, 15x50,, 76 ct
hes also taken 40 wkts during that time.
