Post your top 10 test Batsmen in order with the criteria being their test debut must be on or after 1 Jan 2000. Here is mine:

Root
Sanga
ABD
Kohli
Younis
Amla
Williamson
G. Smith

ATGs - Smith, Sangakkara, Root
Below ATGs( hard to seperate )- de Villiers, Kohli, G Smith etc.

I would say, only top three are ATG. And about 10 more names are there and it is really hard to seperate them. Of them, Kohli is an all formats ATG and so is AB de Villiers. Others are behind.

All in all, the five standout names will be S Smith, Sangakkara, Root, Kohli and AB de Villiers.

I really can't think of any reason to put Root in a separate tier to ABD, Younis, Williamson and especially Kohli.

Absence of Michael Clarke from this discussion something of a travesty tbh.

Easily as good a player as ABdV, Root, KW, Younis, G Smith, Sehwag or Amla who’ve all got multiple mentions.

Probably because Root has much more runs than Kohli and de Villiers at similar average in same time frame. Now, you may say because he plays for England but then their averages are usually lower because of tight schedule and tough opponents.

Williamson and Younis have higher average but those are inflated with easier batting conditions of UAE( for YK) or minnow bashing ( in case of Williamson). Root can bowl too.

Root deserves to be in that ATG discussion IMO. One of the things that always screams ATG to me is a player who rarely has a bad patch and almost never looks out of form. I would say that applies to Root. A bad patch for him is averaging 40 or not getting a big score for 3 or 4 games.

He's also comfortably put to bed his issues converting 50s into 100s. The only black marks against him are his batting at 3 or higher and in Australia. He can still put the Australia part right.

AB 3rd and Clarke 4th???

One was only the 4th most important batsman in his team, while the other was a HTB who played in the easy batting era yet averaged in the 40s.
I can say a number of things as well about the batsmen below them.. as all of them have clear flaws.

Point 1: De Villiers isn't an all formats ATG as he only averaged 26 in T20is.

Point 2: Williamson is obviously an ATG.
Averages for the past 10 years:
Willliamson 63.66
Smith 61.20
Kohli 52.57
Root 50.68

Furtermore, Williamson also has the highest equal top score in a WT20 final, was the best batter in the inaugural WTC final, won the player of the tournament for the 2019 WC, and has the 3rd highest batting average of all time in World Cups for those with 1,000+ runs.

ABD is a T20 ATG, just not one in T20Is. He is probably the best ever batsman in IPL, and imo the 3rd best T20 batsman ever.

England just plays more Tests. Nothing much to separate them in terms of actual years, especially Kohli. Against top opponents, he and Virat both have similar records and it could be argued that both India and England are equally challenging home conditions. To top it off, Root is quite bad in Australia, the most important country to tour for an English batsman to tour. While Virat also has his issues in England, he still has an ATG series there, something Root never managed in Australia; and VK is arguably the best touring bat ever in South Africa and also an ATG in Australia, the two most challenging countries for visiting batsmen.

If you look from just a skill based POV, Kohli is a better player of bounce and seam, as evidenced by his great records in Aus and SA. However, Root is a far superior bat against swing, and much better imo against spin as well. Kohli's numbers against spin are inflated a bit, especially due to the lack of world class spinners in the last decade (bar Ashwin and Jadeja who he doesn't have to face). Lyon is the only other that stands out but he doesn't trouble the Indians much in India because of his bowling style, which relies much more on bounce and dip rather than lateral movement. It's also why "lesser" bowlers like Ajaz, Steve o' Keefe have troubled us more even though they have played us less frequently.
