I think it's partially because of Gooch's involvement in the 1982 rebel South Africa tour.

it’s that and he occupies a lot of mindshare for someone who was in the whole just slightly above average

Gooch was poor against Australia before the 90s, but he was always good against other opposition and always great v WI.

And he at least had a very good Ashes series home and away in his 90s peak, so Australia is a drawback for him rather than a nut he never cracked.

Best England batsman to debut between Geoffrey Boycott and Joe Root in my opinion.
