Gooch made the top score in the match during each of the nine occasions he scored a century in a winning Test cause. He has iconic hundreds in ODI victories too.

I think this is correct still but Gooch scored 454 in a single test at Lords

could still be a record ?

Was responsible for the only time Garner ever got truly taken apart in a ODI. That has to count for something.

Gooch was poor against Australia before the 90s, but he was always good against other opposition and always great v WI.

And he at least had a very good Ashes series home and away in his 90s peak, so Australia is a drawback for him rather than a nut he never cracked.

Best England batsman to debut between Geoffrey Boycott and Joe Root in my opinion.

that’s like saying it’s the best bacon sandwich to buy in Mecca but leaving that aside

Disagree, but not by loads except Stewart who is a distance behind.
