Like that you have similar place names in Newcastle NSW as you to do my neck of the woods i.e. Newcastle Upon Tyne.

I'm from Morpeth, Northumberland as opposed to the NSW variety.

Wallsend up our way is rough and Jesmond is posh so be interesting to see how they compare over there.

I met someone interrailing once from Newcastle Aus. Can't remember how we got onto similar named towns/suburbs.
Morpeth in the Hunter is a charming little town.
Wallsend is kinda suburban these days I guess but like the rest of the region has a lot of old miners cottages
Jesmond is cod ordinary. had to stay there a couple of nights when Burgeinho was playing in a cricket carnival up there a few years ago. Not much happens there, and what does happen isn't great. Much like the UK really.

Lot of place names here derive from the UK, mind you. There's a Birkenhead Point only a couple of kms from here, and not surprisingly a Tranmere Street in the adjoining suburb. Cozza would love it.

As someone who lives close to that area, that’s putting it very lightly.

They're neighbouring suburbs in our Newcastle. Mostly they're just bland working/lower middle-class suburbia. I don't think anywhere in Newy is that rough these days, though granted I haven't spent that much time there.

Definitely one of the bowlers of all time

In all seriousness incredible perseverance, fitness and skills. Have to have massive respect for him. Don't begrudge him being held up alongside the ATG bowlers
+1 to this can't disagree with anything here

tbh I actually had a guy who lives on a street near mine pull a knife on me a week ago because he thought I was following him home after we both got off the bus.

Everyone has contributed with their tributes. I'll keep it simple and short.

Great bowler, not an 'x-factor' tier 1 bowler like Marshall or Imran, but a great bowler nonetheless. He is so fit that he was clocking 86-87 mph even on his last day. On his day, he was as good as peak Hadlee under grey English clouds.

The last of early 2000s cricketers. I'll miss those dark red dukes sending stumps cartwheeling and the constant snob face.

The good thing now is that we can probably win a test series in England this time. His wobbly seam off cutters made our lives hard since 2011.

Hard to put into words how good he has been for England. One of our very best and a legend. Will seem strange not seeing him on the scorecard moving forward. Big boots to fill.

Cheers Jimmy.

Haven't caught up with the thread, but have we ruled out that he didn't just retire now because Australia have started putting roofs on stadiums?

I genuinely disliked the guy when he first came on the scene, especially with that ridiculous haircut. But he really grew on me halfway through his career and has been legendary the past few years. Not sure we'll get another like him.

Is he the 1st England ATG who's technically not an Ashes hero?
He never took a five-fer in the 2010-11 tour, even though he averaged mid 20s that series. However, I remember him bowling brilliantly without much reward in the 2nd innings at Adelaide. He simply didn't allow easy runs or the Australian batting lineup to leave too many deliveries. It was Swann who cleaned up with 5 wickets to finally decide the game before the heavens opened later on the 5th day. I should point out that I was there for that match and always just shaking my head in disbelief at the end looking at the massive scoreboard that they had there. I recall that the ground was developed a couple of years after that and there was no longer the great grass bank that I had the privilege of standing on.
