Match #26- West Indies vs New Zealand (N)- Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, T&T- June 12th-- Group C

We should just go home now. Those guys needed to go home after the IPL and missed preparation so it's clearly urgent to get back to families.
Bracewell's development XI would have fared better. At least this probably draws a line to rejuvenate the T20 squad as a lot of these guys won't be at the next tournament.

What a disaster.

Worst cricket WC for NZ ever?
I'm as vitriolic as anyone about those performances but the reality is this isn't a proper tournament to judge against the actual World Cups. Two games and out in a format as unpredictable as T20 is very different. Australia, for example, were out on their feet in the last World Cup and won the dam thing. This is just a hit and giggle they try and sell us as a showpiece of their product which otherwise has no relevance. And they do it every two years to water it down even more

In terms of overall World Cups also didn't get out of the group stage in 1987 or 1983. In 87 we squeaked past Zimbabwe but lost to Aus and India. Haven't checked the 75 and 79 editions.

Made the semis in 75 & 79. 79 was a very narrow semifinal loss too.

In 83 I'd say the main focus was the test tour of England and winning a test there for the 1st time while 87 was a weak side - no Hadlee and Snedden opened !!??!! (Perhaps no Wright). Comey would've jyst retired too.

10.6 cleans him up with an absolute corker! Floated up deliciously on a fullish length on middle and off. Drifts into Mitchell, which makes him think he can go over Motie's head. Drops on him late, though, and then rips past the outside edge, knocking back off stump. Mitchell cannot believe what has happened, but he has to walk back. West Indies continue to tighten their grip on this game! 63/5

The next tournament is Feb 2026. Hey look, they scheduled it before the IPL! What a neat idea!!

But how many of these guys could you honestly rule out for then? There's going to be guys like Southee, Kane, Conway etc who are going to move heaven and earth potentially to play in the 2026-27 Trans Tasman Test series, so it's not inconceivable they try to play that World T20. I hope you're right but could you bet with any certainty we won't just trot out the same old boring side we do every 2 years?

Anyway it's weak to just pinpoint our weaknesses, well done to the Windies and one hell of a knock under pressure by Rutherford. Clearly a better side, better adapted to the conditions, a better balanced side and got the job done

And honestly, this hurts a bit because I loved him as a cricketer for so long...but I really would like this to be Trent Boult's final acts as a New Zealand player. It won't be...but it should be. Bring the Sears', O'Rourkes, Smith, Foulkes through, because these are all format guys who still have their no.1 focus as playing for NZ. They're not likely to be franchise guys. Get as much black shirt cricket into them as possible (not teal because that uniform sucks, especially when you lose)

Yeah, their bowling was fantastic (fielding kind of let us off the hook a couple of times). I thought the dewy conditions would make life hard for the spinners but they Motie in particular was outstanding.

A lot depends on whether Stead's contract gets renewed in mid-2025 :-) I guess it is possible they could all make the next one which is slightly closer than I realized (thought it would be late 2026). Would need to show consistent form. Even Stead eventually moved Guptill on.

Was going to like this post but I like the teal.

Did you feel the same way about the 2007 WC?

GTFO NZ, embarrassing. Only we can go from looking like we could win the match easily & improve our poor NRR to losing it.

Didn't take the tournament seriously, so deserve to be out.
