With respect to the openers, Simpson and Lawry also faced Hall, Griffith and Pollock. Simpson's premature retirement does leave questions about his record. And while Morris may not have done as well in the fifties, it was a very difficult era in general. In my mind there are three openers who stand above the others - Hobbs, Hutton and Gavaskar. The choices for Australia are not nearly so clear.

Not fine with Trumper not making it really. Simpson do provide sufficient extra utility with his slip fielding and handy leg spins.

Not the biggest fan of using reputations as contributing metrics. But because his career came long before extended footage, you've got to trust rep a bit more with pre-war players as there isn't much eye test access. And Trumper's reputation with his record relative to the era is enough when there aren't two outstanding options.

Haven't seen any of these 3 play, so using their numbers in respective positions as a guide. Miller didn't bat 6 and I want him in the side with bradman, feels like the only way you can justify him batting top 6. Border has similiar numbers at 6 relative to S Waugh playing more cricket in a harder era for a worse AUS team, think border as the #6 for the first 11 with waugh at 5/6 in the second XI is how I would go with this. If i'm missing something and the miller vote is silly please let me know.

No need for that. Smith and can be any one of Chappell/Border/Ponting/Waugh at 5. Miller the AR at 6. Simpson's bowling was about on par with Ted Dexter. 6th bowler type.
