I can't believe I ate the whole thing
In his debut test the top 3 for NZ was Jamie How, Aaron Redmond and James Marshall. I remember we all had great hopes for How at one stage, and even Redmond (I was a fan) and there was a general sentiment at one point Flynn was unfairly treated because he played every spot from 1-7 and never seemed to be given a 'fair run'. He didn't take his chances but pretty much everyone was being given a gig to hopefully fill the spots outside Taylor and McCullum at that point.

Big Jesse, Greg Hay and probably a couple of others were much better players with stronger cases.
Marshall and Flynn got in because reasons. Neither were ever unfairly treated and their final domestic averages reflect that. They were given preferential treatment they never qualified for.

As we've seen with Mitchell, sometimes taking a punt on a guy with ordinary numbers pays off. Sometimes it doesn't. Flynn had a good stonewalling temperament and valued his wicket. He also averaged 60+ in the 2007/08 season before earning a trip to England for his debut. It was one season after 3 ordinary ones though, but it wasn't 100% unwarranted.
J. Marshall was a bit more egregious with his initial picking though. Even so, the year he went to England he averaged 57 in FC.

What’s the general feeling about Alistair Campbell? A sub-30 average in tests and just about 30 in ODIs is disappointing for someone of his talent, more so considering he part of the “leadership group” for at least half his career. Even allowing that Zimbabwe didn’t have an embarrassment of riches, the numbers are very surprising.

The fact Campbell almost makes Zimbabwe AT XI (certainly did as a specialist opener when CW made one 5-6 years ago) ; can speak for itself.....
There was an English (maybe Scottish) poster on the old board I was on who used to moan about the quota system whenever South Africa had a match. Players like Mulder were always a good rebuttal to his nonsense.
The same guy would probably nominate Moeen for this thread.

Definitely doesn't fit this thread. He stopped playing internationals at 29 when in his prime. For Turneresque reasons, not cricketing reasons

The major reason for WI team not got white washed in India in that tour where Venkathapathy Raju toyed Lara.
