The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I wasn't trying to excuse Bedser's record, I was literally just saying that pitches in the 40's were flat, as they were pre war.

No agenda behind it.
And then when it was brought up that other bowlers succeeded you completely ignored it and started talking about their 50s careers…

Honestly reading way too much into this.
I’m not reading anything into it? You said pitches were flat thats why X struggled. When pointed out that Y did perfectly fine you say oh ok but he played most of his tests in another decade.

ROW XI

Herbert Sutcliffe
Geoffrey Boycott
Ricky Ponting^
Frank Worrell *
Clive Lloyd^
Keith Miller^(5)
Ian Healy +
Shaun Pollock (3)
Ray Lindwall (1)
Michael Holding (2)
William O'Reilly (4)

An off spinner would probably be a better fit, but couldn't think of any.

The batting is the weaker link of the team, the bowling has some serious quality though.
It also has an over qualified 5th bowler, an excellent cordon and good batting depth

Not sure what the rules for this side. Who's been ruled out?

Sorry, each counties world XI excluded players
Hmm.

For me:

Boycott
Worrell
Ponting
Harvey
Compton
Waugh*
Ames+
Holding
Lillee
O’Reilly
Walsh/Miller

Worrell didn’t open much, but he was quite successful when he did, I’ve seen him put into other XIs as an opener before, so why not?

*This XI assumes that I am using the same criteria for my SA XI as I would for my World XI and thus not selecting Richards or Procter. Otherwise yeah, Mitchell and Pollock would be perfect slot ins for it.

Two points,

If Worrell is good enough to open here, he's good enough to open for the WI team, no?

There's no criteria to exclude Richards, there's preference, but no criteria. He played test cricket, so he's eligible. Same for Procter.

Well like I said I kind of shoehorned him in there, because he’s clearly a better bat than the available openers to me, plus honestly didn’t want to go back thru and rank the guys behind the 2nd tier of openers. Hell actually maybe it should be Cook?

I’m assuming its based on tests. If it is based on tests, I’m also not including Richards or Procter in my SA XI or this RoW XI.

ROW XI imo:

  1. Herbert Sutcliffe
  2. Matthew Hayden
  3. Ricky Ponting
  4. Allan Border (c)
  5. Steve Waugh
  6. Ian Botham
  7. Alan Knott (wk)
  8. Pat Cummins
  9. Dennis Lillee
  10. Michael Holding
  11. Bill O'Reilly
Also, if Worrell can open here, surely he opens in WI AT XI??

So how is Botham and Knott excluded from Eng ATG side? Same with Ponting, Border and Waugh, surely one of them makes it for Aus?

Like I said, kinda shoehorned him in there out of laziness.

Also lol Macartney seriously? When you have Boycott as an option?

I assume he has Bradman/Smith/Chappell/Miller as the 3-6

I’ll also assume probably Ames as the keeper - Botham being out would mean what, an attack of Barnes/Trueman/Anderson/spinner and pure bats to 6. Interesting to see the two different philosophies if so.
