In general re: slow over rates - from some articles and graphics I’ve checked out, it seems little has actually changed since the 70’s/80’s. Its surprising then, that we have so much discourse about the subject, a lot of it coming from former players from that era or even more recently.

I’d be surprised if its changed much in the past few years.

(tests weren’t split pre and post wwi as the author wanted comparable numbers across all selected periods) (for those interested, in this decade, 85% of tests have a result)

In the past batsmen were assessed on two basic criteria: overall run-scoring and technical proficiency in all conditions, which included the ability to score runs in the worst of those conditions. The further back in time, the more the balance moves towards the latter, as bad pitches become more common.

Nowadays very little professional cricket is played on bad pitches. The focus has shifted to overall records, tempered by checklists by host country. This tends to be applied retrospectively to players from the past when the opinion-forming process was different.

According to the press, Bradman's position as all-time number one has only been seriously challenged by three men, all of whom preceded him. Nobody since has been in the discussion, apart from an Indian-led campaign around fifteen years ago to install Tendulkar as king.

1999 World Cup Semi Final defeat for South Africa who has to be blamed ? They had 9 Batsmen who can bat from Kirsten to Boucher surprisingly all failed to send RSA to final.

Same Story with Pakistan if they still managed a score of 230 they could have won the match probably. Bowling of Pakistan was the Best in this tournament : Akthar, Mushtaq, Akram, Mahmood, Afridi, Razzaq

I mean, Australia is always deadly in the knock outs and SA chockers. Like, even in this WC; India were the strongest team, our bowlers were rolling oppositions and batsmen scoring runs for fun. An argument could be made that Kohli and Shami had the best batting and bowling World Cups of all time; but we still loose.
