Speaking of pronunciations of Murali, I remember a South African commentator listing the teams at the start of a highlights video pronounced it 'Moot-yah Moo-rit-yan'. Now the romanisation of Tamil isn't the most exact and obviously the 'normal' English pronunciation isn't great, but I haven't heard anyone else say it like that.Man I forgot how much I missed Greig’s pronunciation of Murali. (and Greig in general)
It is particularly odd that Tamil people had been in SAF for a century or more in large numbers. They must be used to pronunciation. Guyana however, had anglicized the name and made it easy. (Chandrapalan -> Chanderpaul, Nagamuttu -> Nagamootoo, Narayan -> Narine, etc)Speaking of pronunciations of Murali, I remember a South African commentator listing the teams at the start of a highlights video pronounced it 'Moot-yah Moo-rit-yan'. One of my school mates had a surname of Harie (pronounced Ha-ree). This was his grandparents' name, but not his dad's.It is particularly odd that Tamil people had been in SAF for a century or more in large numbers. They must be used to pronunciation. Understandable in the apartheid days. Also an explanation for the Naidoos of the world, I guess. One of my school mates had a surname of Harie (pronounced Ha-ree). This was his grandparents' name, but not his dad's.
Apparently when his grandfather went to register his father's birth, the person at the counter asked for the name and spelling. Then said 'No, that's not how you spell Harry'. Refused to register him as anything but 'XYZ Harry', so that became his name.
KP couldn’t catch a cold early in his test career but was okay around the groundIsn't Pietersen ****?
