Ashwin - The ATG Spinner

I mean this is inherently untrue. Plenty of bowlers (notable batting examples too but thats a different story), are considered ATG’s despite pretty meh records away.
Who? Maybe Lillee who is more the exception that proves the rule.

Ashwin is like Anderson. He has maxed out on quality rating long ago but sheer volume of wickets gets certain fans thinking he might be pushed ahead.

They’re worse than Jadeja fans.
I have no problem with Jadeja fans,at least he plays like a proper all rounder, the only problem I have with Jadeja is playing white ball cricket where he is a bit and pieces cricketer but Ashwin fans also claim he is a good all rounder as well.

So easy to avoid having to think about what is happening when you can just go "Watch the game". Shameless, as expected of fans of a team that enjoys having SPs in their XIs.
Nah don’t do that, nobody enjoys having him there. Least of all the NZ fans.

On the topic at hand, doesn’t really matter whether it’s scheduling or deliberate, it does seem like India get decks that don’t assist spinners in NZ. It is certainly the case in SA, less so for everywhere else. England is not too bad.

Excuses given for Ashwin for lack of performance in SENA:

- They doctor unsupportive pitches just for him. Or it's not like it is physically possible for him to take wickets in SA anyways.

- India's pace options have improved, so it's not possible for him to run through sides now. Lyon only does it because of special pitches.

- His support bowling is as qualitatively good as if he was running through sides and winning games by himself. Actually, what is a matchwinning performance anyways? It's all a team effort.

- That darn captain. Why does he bench matchwinner Ashwin for that rascal Jadeja?

- Hey, remember that time Ashwin took a dozen wickets in BG Trophy 2021? No need for Ashwin to have to perform better than that ever again. He could have just retired as an ATG after that ATG series.

The two greatest spinners get to have a bogey team or two, or conditions in which they suck, is it? Don't see the same leniency being extended to the very greatest seamers (except draft-dodging Lillee and Ambrose who didn't play enough in the SC). Guys like Marshall, McGrath, and Steyn had to deliver consistently on graveyards for fast bowlers to qualify to their legendary statuses, but Warne and Murali get a pass for being so abject against/in India, WI and Aus. Very strange.
