Worst Player to Play 100 Tests?

AndrewB

International Vice-Captain
The amount of talented cricketers that finished their career with 90-99 Test matches is insane ..

This would be my 90-99 Test XI

1.Azhar Ali (97)
2.Hershelle Gibbs (90)
3.Mohammad Yousuf (90)
4.Garry Sobers (93)
5.Aravinda De Silva (93)
6.Mohammad Azharuddin (99)
7.Adam Gilchrist (WK) (96)
8.Rangana Herath (93)
9.Dale Steyn (93)
10.Curtley Ambrose (98)
11.Bob Willis (90)
A few XIs on similar lines were picked 4 years ago in the ATG discussion thread (though some of the 90-99 team are no longer eligible).

Socerer 01

International Captain
Ishant averaged 36.6 with the ball from 2007 to 2017 and had no secondary skillset. Late peak came when numerous pace bowlers were taking wickets for fun.
yeah no this isnt really true

Ishant since 2014 was decent enough and after the Sussex stint with Gillespie was close to world class, from there it was only year where he averaged above 35

in that timeframe he’s outbowled Shami multiple times and isnt too far away from Broad and Philander both of whom had much better conditions for their style of bowling. not a coincidence that he became much better once Kohli was captain after Dhoni who only used him as a pure workhorse

Kohli and Dravid are very close btw. Same for Kohli and Miandad. Plus Viv is more rounded than Warne, Murali, Gavaskar and Lara(who had a pretty weak record in Ind, Viv only played 3 matches in NZ(which was the only place he had a weak record), plus didnt get the 2000s flat conditions like Lara). . Except that pretty much agree.

Now Kohli debate aside; as I find it tough to rate players before retirement; and especially Kohli with his long ass stretch of poor form until recently. Warne and Murali are the two GoAT spinners; and Lara also didn't played that many matches in India, and none in his prime. Gavaskar's record is also as well rounded as Viv's; and while Viv gets extra points for his performance against Lillee, Gavaskar gets from me due to his against WI, and is just marginally ahead for being an opener in my book.

My mistake, he just played 3 matches in India. Was referring to NZ. Gavaskar’s performance against WI is very good, but he dominated the quartet in India only(83). Viv had great series vs Lillee in Aus. Gavaksar was not very well tested in Aus(that gives Viv an edge record wise). Plus Viv’s SR gives him a big benefit over Gavaskar. So I’d go Viv over him, but Gavaskar in my top 9-10 bats as well.

Fair enough. But he played the quartet only twice; and did dominated a bowling attack of Holding and Garner in WI in the '76 tour. Gavaskar only played Lillee in one series, and on the 3 matches only scored one 50+ score (though that would been a century had not for very biased umpiring). Viv is much ahead in England, while Gavaskar has decently better record in Pakistan. I think it's closer between them than most people makes it out to be; and I just barely rate Gavaskar higher for opener's tax, as I rate it slightly over reputation and SR.

I agree it’s close. Viv is a joint number 4(after Bradman, Tendulkar, Hobbs) with Sobers, while Gavaskar is joint 7.
Bradman
Hobbs
Tendulkar
Sobers/Viv
Lara
Hutton/Gavaskar(Lar, Hutton and Gavaksar very very close).

Would not say Bairstow was ever a "good" keeper. I mostly skipped over a lot of this period of cricket but IIRC Prior was better

Prior started off rusty (had a lot of issues keeping to Sidebottom) but improved significantly through his career until injuries did for him. He was just a damn good (and very reliable) cricketer at his peak. I don't think of Bairstow's keeping ever changing at all, he's generally good to the seamers, but very poor to spin. If it wasn't for his batting, he'd have never played International Cricket, but even then he averages less than Prior. I've never been his biggest fan, but he gets hot periods which make him undroppable.

I'd prefer to remember him as a gun ODI opener who won a World Cup.

not having for a second Hooper was any better than Bairstow. Deffo getting brownie points for how classy he was.

it was only in the twilight of his career he achieved a level of real consistency. he was absolutely bog standard. calling out his bowling is the equivalent of calling out Bairstows keeping.

it's Boucher btw.
