Young has shown more application tbf, but yeah behind the 3 guys in squad the statistical next best is young Rhys Mariu, who has had a gun start to his career tbf.

The openers around the traps atm are almost sacrifice wickets. I've noticed a lot of 18-22 year olds being put in there while Greg Hay, Cole McConchie and George Worker dive for the middle order. Makes me a bit cynical tbh.
Yeah seems like every batsman under 24 has been shafted to opening regardless of their actual position

Unfortunately that ignores the fact that Will Young hasn't at really stage ever shown he's a Test player, especially not an opener. I'd love to drop Latham to tell him to go sort his **** out but he's one of the best two openers in the country, and comfortably.

He used to be a good player, now I'm genuinely not sure whether he still is and is mentally not there, or if his game is now ****e.
Yeah that’s the conundrum, and I definitely agree Young has been done no favours by being asked to open. He’s no opening bat and should not ideally be considered one in the future, but has at least filled the brief of battling the new ball (which is more than I expected from him against this attack).

But Going into the final test of the summer I think Latham needs a reality check. Later assignments this year are in Asia so he’ll be pencilled in obviously, but as a one-off I don’t think dropping him is the worst thing. Of course, it’ll probably end up the same way dropping Southee for the SCG did I suppose.

Lyon didn't look tired at all to me. Just struggling with the wind and employing weird tactics. Still very easily could have had both batsmen on a few occasions.
If he's getting carted around I would understand it but I otherwise hate when Lyon comes around the wicket. His biggest strength is trying to open up the gate with that extra bounce and having all modes of dismissal available

I think we take the approach of everyone not even mentioning his name or speaking about him at all. He can **** off. Mainly for the vile act, but as a cricketer for that disgusting shot yesterday and his inability to catch today. Go back to the franchise leagues
I was surprised he was even called up in the first place tbh, apart from the off field stuff he just doesn't look like a test standard cricketer on the field.

It's not like he is a youngster either like O'Rourke who you pick with a view to the future, he is 32 so it's not like he will get any better in the future.

If we wanted to pick an older bowling all rounder why didn't we pick Doug Bracewell, the hero of Hobart, who won our last test match against Australia.

He would at least have been a more popular pick and would probably have performed a lot better too.

Stumps day 3:

Australia 1.18
NZ 6/1
Draw 100/1

There is some hope for the blackcaps considering they have traded at a high of 50/1

Rachin/Mitchell/Phillips/Blundell will need to score another 200+ between them to have a decent shot.

They could have picked any fc bowler and it would have been more popular lol

Holy cow you're right, why didn't we? Bracewell is only a year older and his FC averages are eerily similar to the SP's. The big difference being that Dougie has actually done something at international level (and isn't a scumbag).
I think he must be carrying a niggle as he hasn't bowled heavy loads lately. Not in the CD team for the current Plunket Shield game either.

Maybe it's the other way. Maybe Parkes is smart enough to know where his best opportunity lies.
Our top 5 are all the same age bar Ravindra. Someone Parkes age can target anywhere, but older guys know they need to give themselves the chance to score huge runs.

He was top Plunket Shield wicket taker and did well on the A tour series win against Australia A that O'Rourke also did well on. Unfortunately, since Plunket Shield finished he probably hasn't played anything other than T20 in the recently concluded UAE competition. Assuming O'Rourke is fit Santner will presumably play in his place at Hagley.

Bugger. Still a more logical selection than you know who.
Both Smith and Dougeh have a strong statistical case, and Clarke and Foulkes a weaker stats case but are clearly talented.

He is there because he can bat, is an old ball option, and touched 150 in a T20 vs SL. He's also having the season of his life.

His pace collapsed from 140 to Southee speed in the quick innings turnaround so I wonder if he's gassed. Ironic given they exiled Lockie for Perth.

Re the selection merit on c

Strange example considering the ages of the Otago top 7:

Cumming 20
Parkes 23
Dale Phillips 25
Foxcroft 25
Todd 19
Georgeson 24
Chu 23
Phillips, Georgeson and Foxcroft have played loads of domestics and Georgeson is an opener. Get up there.

But yeah Otago aren't the only ones.
