Rachin is a bit rocks and diamonds at the moment but like Phillips he’s a very useful to have in a lineup given his willingness to play shots, where others tend to go into their shell against bowling of this quality.

Everything needs to go perfectly and that's a tall order. When the next wicket falls Blundell and Phillips will find it a different game. Ravindra was in today, but no one else was. Same goes for Green first dig.
Yeah, agree. I think we can win this, but do I think we will? No.

Too much damage done on day 2 to recover from. while AUS have their own issues, having 370 to defend is a luxury they’re unlikely to let slip.

Very fun test pitch though, one that is quite different from a lot of people’s preconceived ideas about test cricket in NZ.
A lot of those preconceived ideas have come from the locals tbf. Lost count of the number of people who were absolutely positive that this pitch would turn into a total road on day 2 because "that's just what happens here" despite this pitch very plainly being a very different sort of pitch than what one would normally expect.

As out of sorts as he's been, reckon Conway would've some better than Latham here
If Conway is fit for the next test I would drop Latham both on form and to send a message. As with Shreyas Iyer, if you’re not contributing even in your supposed area of specialisation (at home, and against spin) it’s a waste of space.

His first innings dismissal felt like watching an average 90s Indian batsman playing in Aus/SA for the first time. Second innings, for such a good player of spin Lyon just seems to have it too easy against him. TBF that can be said of Williamson too.

Real question is, how hard australia can make this for NZ. Starc looks his usual out of sorts 4th innings self and Lyon looked like he was getting tired. So its up to Cummins and Haze to make this difficult for NZ otherwise they'll cruise tomorrow as the 1st session is the best time to bat

Yes don't forget Cummins and Hazelwood need to watch what they eat for breakfast tomorrow too because constipation is a real risk for Australia here

It's the kind of wicket Travis Head could sneak a haul on

Went and did some statsguruing, was curious about our (Australia's) recent batting numbers.

First screenshot is the start of the away ashes to now, second is last wtc cycle including the final.

Numbers are a bit grim. Marnus and head particularly, but even khawaja has regressed a bit. Khawaja's particularly interesting to me, because it's not just his average that's dropped, but his Sr has also gone down fron 50 to 40. I remember him struggling a fair bit to find runs despite eating up a ton of balls as the last ashes went on. His issue hasn't been getting starts this cycle, tons of 40's in there, it's more been a lack of conversion, last cycle he would have turned a few of those into big 100's. Feel like it could just be a Smith post 2019 ashes situation where teams have just figured out how to keep him quiet.

Think my biggest concern is how the batting unit as a whole has performed. Been very rare this cycle for multiple batsmen to go big in the same game like Smith and marnus did in sl, and Smith and head did in the wtc final last year. The batting has been more "one guy is going to play a blinder while everyone else digs in around him to get us par." It's particularly worrying because it's not like where playing India in india or getting served up 2019 ashes type conditions. Our success has more been down to sides fielding horribly (bairstow in the first half of the ashes, Pakistan in general, even nz this test).

Unfortunately that ignores the fact that Will Young hasn't at really stage ever shown he's a Test player, especially not an opener. I'd love to drop Latham to tell him to go sort his **** out but he's one of the best two openers in the country, and comfortably.

He used to be a good player, now I'm genuinely not sure whether he still is and is mentally not there, or if his game is now shite.

We almost need a compilation of these SK SP zingers. Good efforts from CW during this test.
I think we take the approach of everyone not even mentioning his name or speaking about him at all. He can **** off. Mainly for the vile act, but as a cricketer for that disgusting shot yesterday and his inability to catch today. Go back to the franchise leagues

Young has shown more application tbf, but yeah behind the 3 guys in squad the statistical next best is young Rhys Mariu, who has had a gun start to his career tbf.

The openers around the traps atm are almost sacrifice wickets. I've noticed a lot of 18-22 year olds being put in there while Greg Hay, Cole McConchie and George Worker dive for the middle order. Makes me a bit cynical tbh.

Its a new zealand batting special no matter what format. Boredom city.

Lyon didn't look tired at all to me. Just struggling with the wind and employing weird tactics. Still very easily could have had both batsmen on a few occasions.
