so its o'rourke henry southee (ugh) and santner (double ugh)
I think it's Kuggeleijn. The Basin will likely favour a bounce bowler, and whilst Rachin isn't the bowler Santner is, he's at least a stop gap option to bowl with the same arm, whilst Phillips turns it the other way (whilst also being part-time).

The sad thing is that if Scott K hadn't done anything horrible, we'd very likely be backing him as the no-brainer selection. Consistent wickets at FC level, took bags against Australia A - also scored a century against them - and his back of a length, bang it in sort of style might work and is what we need as a third seamer/4th seamer. If we want to beat Australia, I think he has to play. It's just in an ideal world, I don't want him to.

I also can't see Santner scoring runs v Australia. They'll just bounce the **** out of him.

It's not even like Kuggeleijn has a stellar FC record - I just don't know why you'd select him knowing the controversy it would cause. He's not streets ahead of his rivals.

I'm surprised at how suddenly the tide has turned against Southee. He's been our best bowler for quite a while now, and two bad tests doesn't suddenly make him awful. Southee h8ers coming out in full force once more.

Southee has a lot left to offer NZ. I'm probably his biggest defender on here.

Southee against AU? Ehhhhh

‘BLACKCAPS opener Devon Conway will miss the first Tegel Test against Australia, starting at the Cello Basin Reserve in Wellington on Thursday.

The decision to rule Conway out was made following additional scans in Wellington yesterday which revealed damage to his left thumb.

Another update will be provided later in the week following further medical consultation to ascertain the extent of the injury and the final diagnosis.

Conway sustained the injury while wicket-keeping in the second KFC T20I at Eden Park on Friday night.

Canterbury batter Henry Nicholls has been called into the squad as batting cover and will join the team in Wellington for training this morning.’

He’s done

125k swing out of the hand, no zip or lift. Not everyone is James Anderson. He’s 35 now he just doesn’t have the physical attributes he use to have. Jacob Duffy is a much better bowler now, should have Southee’s spot.

At this point, I'd rather Rachin open. At least he's an opener by trade. At least for the first Test, he'll be in a familiar environment at the Basin.
