According to the Stuff article, he is done; he won’t play the tests. Seems he was told that he wasn’t in the XI so has called time.

‘Neil Wagner has called time on his illustrious 64-test career for the Black Caps and will bow out following the test series against Australia, starting in Wellington on Thursday.

The 37-year-old pace-bowler will not be in the XI for the first test at the Basin Reserve and will be released from the squad ahead of the second test in Christchurch.’

Feels very much like Kuggeleijn is gonna be in tbh. Will be seen as a like for like (in the vaguest sense) for Wagner's bowling as well as being a decent #8. Plus we have Phillips and Rachin to bowl spin and it'll be easy for Stead and Co to say that 3 "spinners" is overkill.

I want Santner, and the last thing I want is for this long-awaited test to be sullied by Kuggs Issues, but alas here we are.

I'd definitely pick a fourth quick who could bat ahead of Santner. I wouldn't have made it Kuggs for several reasons, but for the sake of balance it makes sense for it to be that type of player.

I'm open to a spinner at the Basin because of the state highway 1 day 3 onwards issue, but otherwise agree on balance. Can't expose too long of a tail against this lot.

On the other hand, Macewell took 7 wickets across 2 Basin tests last summer, and we had some dodgy moments in the second test against South Africa when we relied on Ravindra and Phillips to carry the spinload (plz read this Gary)

Mitchell's bowling could be useful on the Day 1 seamy road as well.

Another snippet from the press conference -

‘Wagner says the discussion with Stead after the South African series was he wasn't going to be picked for the Basin test. He says it was a really nice kind gesture from the team to be involved with the team for this series and (then) to step away from the game.’

Plus Kuggeleijn did really well again Aus A right? I'm afraid it's all adding up
He slaughtered them, especially in Australia. Over there, he averaged just under 18. On top of that, he's the current top wicket taker in PS.

I'm not a fan of him getting called up, but at least Wells was honest about why. I maintain that he robbed Duffy of a debut against England last year, but this year he has earned it, somehow (I still don't understand the turnaround from him).
Last year, I cheered at him getting BazBalled (& that Stuart Broad sky ball in his only official outing as the NightHawk that neither he nor Blundell caught was hilarious), but there's no room for that against Australia. If he gets into the XI, he needs to wreck them.
