Maybe it was just always the intention. They clearly don't have much faith in Sarfaraz having passed on so many opportunities to debut him. It's not that silly to think they might think Jadeja is just better.
Axar randomly batting 5 a couple of times might count against my theory though.

Well hey, so at least we know a few things.
- Patidar will not cut it at this level; sure, give him a few chances but he's not going anywhere.
- Gill's will be a career that will never quite be put out of its misery because he's Indian cricket's golden boy but he will continue being a mid-to-late 30s averaging batsman...if he's lucky.
- Jaiswal's failings outside off seem more down to impatience and judgement than any chronic technical issues. He will probably struggle away from home but definitely worth persevering with.
- Patidar will not cut it at this level; sure, give him a few chances but he's not going anywhere.

Bumrah has his number atm and his spin game has suffered under Bazball. Averages 41 against it since McCullum came in which is very low for someone of his calibre against spin that has played most of his innings outside the SC.
