It varies, as batsmen I rate Martyn higher but I saw him at his best but only caught the end of Waugh's career. Waugh's fielding (and bowling I guess) pushes him up though. When they played together 2000-2002 Martyn was definitely a better bat

Anyway I think we've found the answer to the thread. Whether it's Waugh, Martyn, de Silva or whever it's probably a middle-order bat around that standard

I think it's someone who's worse than M Waugh / Martyn but better than Mead as a middle-order bat, while being marginally better than Langer as an opener.

Katich might be a genuinely good shout on that front, while Cowdrey's possibly a little too good.

I think you're overthinking it. Katich wasn't really a better opener than Langer. Langer also averaged ~50 as opener from when he came back into the team in 2001 until his retirement.

Katich wasn't a better opener than middle-order bat either, his stint opening just coincided with him getting an extended run in the team. Still could be a good shout just based on being a similar level bat to Martyn/Waugh/de Silva etc.

Toshack perhaps, but not Johnson and definitely not Bill Brown. Don't forget Harvey wasn't picked in the early tests and McCool was injured and didn't play any of the tests.

Still had Johnson's offies and Johnston bowled SLAs as well as seamers. Had McCool not been injured they would've had his leggies.

Anyway, wasn't there a new ball every 60 or so overs? No need for a gun spinner.

Nah

Symonds wouldn't make an Indian team of 4-5 years ago. Probably wouldn't even make the current NZ team ahead of Glenn Phillips.

Shakib, Cairns and Stokes good shouts. Cairns is a better bowler than Lee plus the batting, and Shakib + Stokes are both better overall than most #6s floating around 00s Aus.

Same logic for the great windies but all 3 bat 6 ahead of Dujon at 7.
