Who do you think was better?Either him or Martyn were the bottom rung when they were at their peak though, post 1999, which is what matters if we're talking about making every team

It varies, as batsmen I rate Martyn higher but I saw him at his best but only caught the end of Waugh's career. Waugh's fielding (and bowling I guess) pushes him up though. When they played together 2000-2002 Martyn was definitely a better batWho do you think was better?
Toshack perhaps, but not Johnson and definitely not Bill Brown. Don't forget Harvey wasn't picked in the early tests and McCool was injured and didn't play any of the tests. They went without Loxton in the first two tests, however, instead playing:
Barnes /
Morris /
Bradman /
Hassett /
Miller o /
Brown /
Johnson o /
Tallon + /
Lindwall o /
Johnston o
Toshack o
In which case Stokes still makes it for Toshack, or even Johnson or Brown.
Still had Johnson's offies and Johnston bowled SLAs as well as seamers. Had McCool not been injured they would've had his leggies.Thing with Tallon is that despite underperforming with the bat at Test level he was a fantastic keeper. He makes a number of pre-Gilchrist Australian ATG XI’s, for example. And with Miller and Lindwall his mediocre batting can be masked. No great spinner a bigger flaw really.
NahAndrew Symonds?
Like Mark Waugh an aggressive middle order bat (ave 40) and handy spin or medium pace and great fielder but not as good as Mark Waugh?
Can you imagine if he did. To be a fly on the wall in that dressing room . . .Symonds wouldn't make an Indian team of 4-5 years ago.
As I said earlier the answer has to be Eddie BarlowI think it's someone who's worse than M Waugh / Martyn but better than Mead as a middle-order bat, while being marginally better than Langer as an opener.
Katich might be a genuinely good shout on that front, while Cowdrey's possibly a little too good.
Then the answer is back to being Mark WaughNah
Symonds wouldn't make an Indian team of 4-5 years ago. Probably wouldn't even make the current NZ team ahead of Glenn Phillips.
As I said earlier the answer has to be Eddie Barlow
Mods, confused reacc plzEddie Barlow couldn't make the Invincibles top 6.
Is he worse than Mark Waugh and Martyn? If so, how does he make those teams? Pre-2005 Aus had no need for another bowling optionAs I said earlier the answer has to be Eddie Barlow
nah these have been thoroughly debunkedShakib + Stokes are both better overall than most #6s floating around 00s Aus.
Opens instead of LangerIs he worse than Mark Waugh and Martyn? If so, how does he make those teams? Pre-2005 Aus had no need for another bowling option
Post in October 2022 conflicts with one today.Mods, confused reacc plz
Not sure he would, but if he did, wouldn't the answer then be Langer?Opens instead of Langer
No, because he wouldn't get picked ahead of Hobbs and Sutcliffe or Simpson and Lawry so would need to do better in middle order/bowl etc.Not sure he would, but if he did, wouldn't the answer then be Langer?
Langer would be just as good in the middle-orderNo, because he wouldn't get picked ahead of Hobbs and Sutcliffe or Simpson and Lawry so would need to do better in middle order/bowl etc.
