All-Time SA ODI XI

Marius

International Debutant
I posted an all-time South African ODI XI on Twitter and got a bit of flack for leaving out Kallis. What are everyone's thoughts? I honestly don't think he makes an all-time SA ODI team, although he walks into an all-time SA Test XI, perhaps even an all-time Test XI from all countries.

But this was my SA ODI XI:
QDK (wk)
Gibbs
Amla
AB
Faf (c)
Miller
Klusener
Pollock
Donald
Ntini
Tahir

Ntini also maybe questionable.

Kallis has to be there in my opinion, Highest ODI run scorer , player of the tournament in SA's only tournament win.

I like your team. Definitely wouldn't be taking Kallis. Would probably marginally favour Morkel over Ntini (and tbh Steyn is still in the discussion despite being not as good as he was in Tests. Cronje had a good record for the time he played and would solve the 6th bowler problem but i can understand why you wouldn't want to pick him.

But that was in the late '90s. His SR is low 70s, not good enough in modern ODIS (but you could argue that if he had played later he would have adopted his game to score quicker, we know he was capable of scoring fast).

Kallis to anchor the ship, be a dravid/root/Bevan player in collapses
FAF
Miller

Very solid batting up to number 9, 6 bowling options, dynamic batting line up, batting and bowling resources, Kallis is there to give balance

Rhodes

Adams
Cronje
Tahir
Ntini
Morkel

I think Kallis is fair bit better than a number of the players in RSA have to offer, but I'm not playing him. Bad fit for an ATG side.

1.Amla
2.De Kock (WK)
3.Gibbs
4.Cronje
5.AB
6. Miller
7.Lance Klusener
8.Shaun Pollock
9.Morkel
10. Donald
11. Tahir

I think Jacques Kallis is a good addition to this side, as the side needs an anchor. The one I am surprised no one is talking about Fannie de Villiers; I think he's a level above Steyn, Morkel and Ntini in ODIs.

I think with Kallis it depends what you are trying to achieve with your XI. If the purpose is to recognise the players who achieved the most for SA in their careers then I think Kallis belongs in the side. However if you are building the theoretically strongest side possible to take on other countries' hypothetical XIs then I wouldn't pick him as he probably doesn't suit that side.

Essentially with his high average but ordinary SR he was a great player for a regular side to have (obviously particularly so with his bowling factored in), but he would be a relative liability in an ATG batting line up.

Fanie had a higher strike rate than the other bowlers mentioned and a lower wickets per match than anyone except Klusener and Kallis. He has the best economy, but he's not as potent a wicket taker as the others, which is probably what's counting against him.

6.Hansie Cronje (C)

9.Dale Steyn
10.Imran Tahir
11.Allan Donald
like this team, I would go for this team but swap Cronje and Miller in the batting order. Cronje was technically a better batter than Miller and a very good player against spin. Miller is ideal at 6 where he can just blast it and then you have Klusener afterwards. How awesome.

Agreed I would have Kallis as the anchor. With a stronger team like this and the more recent advent of T20 I think he could have adapted his game and scored a bit quicker than his strike rate if required.

But someone from the opposing team can just Cronje a leather jacket and then who knows how he will perform.

Yeah, I feel with Donald, Pollock and Tahir you have enough strike bowlers and Fannie was a master at keeping things tight. He definitely finds a place in my team over a Morkel, Steyn or Rabada; who are masterful wicket takers but can be expensive more often.

Cronje the greatest white ball captain we have ever had , makes my team not just on ability but leadership.

Looks perfect. Captain is the last man getting in that team though.

Gibbs is there for his big match performance. Miller also for his World Cup knockouts performance.

Of all these names, only debatable omission is Amla who has superb bilateral stats but I would prefer Gibbs type player here.

Kallis at 3 can be the rock to anchor one end in this team which has strokemakers all the way through.
