Athlai

Not Terrible
A bloke with a high score of 108 ain't a top 3 bat of all time. He's an ATG of a period of jamodis that couldn't cop it in the actual true standard of quality, test cricket.

I really think it's 1999

That competition was just so strong. So many ATG bowlers in their prime
Comparison time:

1999 v 2003

Gilchrist = Gilchrist
M.Waugh = Hayden
Ponting < Ponting
S.Waugh
> Martyn
Lehmann = Lehmann
Bevan = Bevan
Moody < Symonds
Warne = Hogg
Reiffel/other < Lee
Fleming < Gillespie/Bichel
McGrath = McGrath

2003 comes out comfortably on top. The only improvement 1999 had was S.Waugh over Martyn and that's even debatable. Whereas Ponting was definitely better in 2003, Symonds way better than Moody, Lee way better than Reiffel/Dale/Julian and Gillespie/Bichel have Fleming covered IMO.

Hogg = Warne might be a controversial opinion but even if we go with Warne as the superior option 2003 still pips it 4:2

I think Fleming is easily equal to Gillespie and Bichel

Fleming has a solid ODI bowling record plus important performances in WC games

Nah Bichel also won 2 games with his batting in 2003

even if you put them as equal it's still 2003. Symonds replacing Moody, Ponting being way better and Lee replacing Reiffel are massive improvements

Are we using the metric of how they performed just in the cup? Or how good they were in ODIs in general at the time of the cup

Ponting was already one of the best in the world in ODIs by the time of the '99 WC

It's got to be a bit of both. Ponting in 2003 was his absolute peak and he was nowhere near as good a player in 1999

I rate bracken higher than bichel and Clarke higher than the likes of Lehmann. Watson and hussey were ATGs too but they weren't needed much. Both on paper and their performances were better in 07.
Man to man 2003 is stronger though. Watson was still new and hadn't done much. Hussey was a downgrade on Bevan especially with performance taken into account. Symonds played better in 2003 too.

Bowling wise 2003 also comes out on top. McGrath and Hogg cancel out but Lee + Bichel/Gillespie > Bracken + Tait. Or at the very most they are equal
