Overrated by CW XI and Underrated by CW XI

Coronis

International Coach
Ummmm, I would agree with the all-rounders and specialist batsmen.

Coronis says Miller is under rated, but last week we had multiple calling hime the 4th best cricketer of all time, like ever. And if that's the take now, then definitely he's over rated. Some others as well.

Specialist batsmen, definitely, and probably a bit by me as well.
Underrated in terms of cricketing “experts”, especially players. Many of whom would have him in their first XI and who would proclaim him as the best AR of all time.

Sorry, not understanding.

If many of them have him in the 1st XI and the best all-rounder of all time, how is that under rated.

Bobby Simpson, Jacques Kallis, Arthur Morris, BJ Watling, Ross Taylor, Graeme Smith, Younis Khan, Alan Davidson, Graeme Swann, Ken Barrington a tad overrated here imo.

Earlier this month @PlayerComparisons commented "Barrington is probably the most underrated player on this forum" yet @ma1978 lists him as overrated. This, no doubt, is because of ma1978's sweeping view that the '60s players are overrated in general.
When I first saw the title of this thread, 4 players came to mind when it came to being underrated on CW. There are 2 batsmen (Harvey and Barrington) and 2 bowlers (Lillee and Statham) that I regard as being underrated here.

Because there's no consensus. Some rate his too highly and some just dismiss him. As with all things, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Here is my hastily prepared CW Underrated XI

Lawry
Morris
Harvey
Barrington
Miandad
Mohinder Amarnath
Kapil Dev
Evans
Lillee
Statham
Laker

An overrated XI is harder as there are always members quick to put down players highly rated by others. I'll work on it and run the risk of leaving myself open for criticism.

Lawry=instant like.

Amarnath is a good shout too.

The Tiger King
As for Imran, he's no doubt one of the best cricketers of all time; but no way he's the best while Don and Sobers exists, and I have seen a no of people to say that he is the best.
A number of people? Seems excessive.

There used to be a time when PEWS thought he was the greatest test cricketer, but he's come around to putting him at 2 now. So I don't know where you get a "number of people"?

He gets underrated in most other places. Seems fairly rated on CW.

Looking back on my underrated XI, I'd replace Gower with Clive Lloyd and Laker with Lance Gibbs.

The beauty of a thread such as this is there is no right and wrong. A player perceived as underrated by one may be seen as overrated by another.

Having said that, here is my overrated XI comprised of players I don't right as highly as many others do.

G.Smith
Simpson
Sangakarra
Ponting
Kallis
Chanderpaul
A.Flower
Jadeja
Steyn
Waqar Younis
Swann

Ponting? Besides the late career dip, what's wrong?

Kallis is the 2nd greatest batting all rounder, and it's not close. Mid 50's with the bat, caught everything and was a useful part time bowler.

Didn't know anyone even rated Chanderpaul

Steyn, you don't believe he's top 5? The man, the match winner?

This is fighting words

Watling wasn't even truly appreciated during his career, though granted I barely read this sub so maybe he's getting some post career love.

I accept your point re Ponting but to rate Kallis so highly as an all-rounder when his bowling is (as described by you) "useful". There are plenty of top batsmen who were "useful" bowlers but they rarely get mentioned in all-rounder discussions.

Chanderpaul? Receives plenty of support here. (See Chanderpaul v Barrington thread)

Steyn? I've watched him in 3 series in Australia where his 31 wickets @ 28.77 was "fair". In England his 2 series produced 23 wickets @ 31.65. Enough said?
