This is one of comparative genius. As a cricketer, Sobers is obviously peerless overall but just with the willow - it's very close.
I think Viv faced better bowling for longer.

W. I batsmen

Sobers
Richards
Lara

I wish Sobers bowled less and batted higher up the order.

Richard's peak wasn't as long as most top tier ATG's

Lara had his issues with extreme pace and bounce

Slifer

International Captain
@Slifer rates Conrad Hunte over Chanderpaul I think.
I rate the following over Shiv:

The big 4 (Lara, Viv, sobers and George)
3Ws
Kanhai, Lloyd, Greenidge and yes Hunte.

Shiv is probably on the same level as the Richies, Kallicharans and Basil Butchers.

Viv. Sobers has a better average, better long term peak, and more monster series. But Viv batted in a tougher era, has the best short term peak for anyone bar Bradman, dominated more ATG and near ATG bowlers than anyone, and has a much better home away record than Sobers(NZ aside, Sobers didn‘t prove himself in Pak as well). Plus, the psychological factors associated with Viv, and his ability to turn a match on its head quickly cause of his SR, make him edge this, in my view.

Agreed with everything except this. It's not like we are comparing him to Hammond or Kallis. Sobers himself was an attacking batsman and he was probably more capable to intimidating opposing bowlers than Viv. Atleast that's what Lillee said.

Sure, but it’s more Viv’s advantage than Sober’s weakness. There is no ATG batsmen, who scores as quickly as Viv.

Its Lara for me, but Viv over Sobers ever so slightly given the scale of his peak and the era he batted.
