Williamson out is really hurting NZ , They need their captain back ..
Yes it would be good to get him back, but your statement that it's really hurting NZ isn't correct at all.

They've been travelling just fine & the only 2 games they lost were the Australian one when they were an odds-on chance of winning at the end, needing 9 from 3 with Neesham on strike & of course the lost to India when NZ really lost their way towards the end of the batting innings yet still pushed India closer than most other teams. Have you been watching?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough so I apologise..
But with all due respect I'm talking from a viewpoint where I see New Zealand as a team that can win this tournament.

Saying stuff like we pushed India close , we could have beaten Australia..This is not the right mentality, you're not a underdog , you've made two WC finals in a row.

Williamson was clearly missed in those two big games vs India and Australia both as a leader and batsman ..
Now you're in a bit of a bother, with a big clash vs SA and a Pakistan side desperate to qualify up next.
Williamson would help greatly in these clashes, the aim for NZ should be to finish in the top 2 positions and without Williamson it does hurt NZ cause he's your best batsman and captain, not that I think your team is bad.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Damn I forgot about Ferguson's injury & the prospect of our mediocre man Southee potentially coming back to stink up the joint.

Biggest problem of course if he's not a like for like replacement for Ferguson, and will be murdered bowling 3rd change in the middle but at the same time isn't good enough to push Henry or Boult out as one of our opening bowlers. This is where we always should have selected Milne in the squad over Southee.

I'm not a huge fan of Southee in ODIs as he got a free pass for far too long but the last 2 years when we've had injuries to our first choice bowlers, he stood up pretty well IMO. If anything he'd be better than Ferguson in current conditions because Ferguson can be extremely hittable and the faster you bowl the faster you go to the fence. Southee's variations and prolonged experience of Indian conditions should count for something.

However, I do agree Milne would be a better option as he was hitting his straps leading up to the tournament. I just don't think Southee is as bad now as he has been and I don't think he's a waste of space in the squad.

Also I know those stats seem misleading, and for those who are interested in opposition in that time:

Not Terrible
My waving of the flag of Southee in this world cup was entirely based on the idea he'd come into these harder games with form. At this stage I think we play Sodhi unless the pitch absolutely requires pace

I would agree with Sodhi being a must pick except he does have history with melting down in big games.

He's situational for me. SA have a bit of history at collapsing in a heap to spin so I'd pick him for this game.

I don't think it's necessarily untrue we're missing him, or that we're not missing him. I imagine people could mount arguments each way. I mean, you certainly couldn't say that Latham seemed to have things under control in the bowling effort v Australia. Runs-wise, maybe not - although you'd be swapping Kane's runs for Young's, and Young hasn't been scoring many (32, 17 and 0 v Australia, India and England). But yes, that also allowed Ravindra in at 3, which has been an incredible boost.
