Brook needs to justify his selection, his list a record is poor, and he's keeping good players out of this squad.

FWIW re Curran, his last SEVEN ODI series including this he's only once averaged under 36 with the ball, that in Bangladesh, and 36.25 in South Africa aside the rest are 40+ . That stretches back to South Africa series in 2022, his batting up to that point averaging 28.20 but at a relatively pedestrian pace, the average has gone down but the SR up
Curran has definitely got his spot on the basis of his T20 accomplishments (speaking of, here's Harry Brook...). Willey has consistently outperformed him in ODIs, but seen as a less 'exciting' pick maybe. Probably worth giving him a go, just a bit tricky that we have SA up next, which is likely to be rough on whatever bowling line up we pick.

WTF?

Two down and struggling in the powerplay. We are in danger of losing to minnows in two different sports at the same time.
if you mean the egg shaped ball, might not even have started at this rate!

Just anticipating a possible upset come catastrophe, Afghans vs the bigger guns, the ones who would be humiliated in losing to them even once

Afghanistan ODIs

vs PAK : P7 W0 L7

vs IND : P4 W0 L3 (Tie 1)
vs AUS : P3 W0 L3

vs NZL : P2 W0 L2
vs ENG : P2 W0 L2

vs SAF : P1 W0 L1

So only avoidance of defeat was a tie vs India. vs Sri Lanka who I don't count as a big gun at the moment/anymore have W3 L7 NR 1, deshis is 10-6 to the deshis, 18-10 to Afghans against the zimmers and 5-3 to windies with an NR as well. More wins to Afghans over this lot (30) than the big guns as listed have PLAYED (19) against the Afghans

I suggest it may be an even bigger upset than when they blew it vs Ireland at the World Cup, or Zimbabwe, not that a user on beeb have your say would accept the value of this format, or what it can throw at you (T20is not quite a lottery, but less significance in results)

re Root retiring in 2027, after that wicket he may want to retire now! (only kidding) Lot on Brook and later Livingstone, need to justify their inclusion and a wicket and tidy overs against Afghanistan doesn't do that by any stretch, short or long

Curran should have established himself in Tests and ODIs by now IF he is or going to be good enough

usually said of Willey is good opening the bowling, but what then, plus Curran will always get the nod re second skill set of batting even though neither should be batting above 8, probably 9 in an ODI line up

have wondered if England might stick him up the order a bit, give him a real challenge, kind of like promoting Ali although he of course was a batsman who could bowl spin so not exactly new territory for him, just he never established himself higher up the order in Tests.

I'm off now, but reckon England will be 150/4 or 5 and struggling a fair bit, doubting Brook or Livingstone will get more than maybe 40-50 but don't care enough if 'proven wrong', any county cricketer (standard) should be able to make a score every now and again, one swallow doesn't make a summer (or a good girlfriend)

Not sure why they keep saying it was just Roy against Brook, tbh I'd have had Crawley, Duckett, Hain, Jacks and even Abell in the convo.

Hope in an hour or so this post looks silly.

Liam Livingstone ? 35 @ 115 SR with bat , 12 wickets @ 25 with the ball ..
Those kinda stats would get you into any top 7 in World Cricket , he shouldn't be anywhere near under threat , especially when Moeen Ali made a career doing far far less in white ball cricket for England.

good news for England is none of the Afghan bowlers has done particularly well so far in this World Cup, bad news is hasn't stopped them taking two England wickets for 33 runs on the board!!

Curran's bowling always had a very low ceiling and his batting has gone nowhere. Can be pretty happy with his career so far though considering how fundamentally limited he is.

Yeah. Think we will sneak into the 4 but big outsiders from there. But everyone is outsiders except India.

Roy has the experience (over 100 caps), won the World Cup, IS an opener and has a good record in India

But as you may have seen from posts a while back of mine, and today, too many bowlers in the squad, didn't need Curran AND Wood AND Topley AND Willey AND Woakes AND Atkinson, obviously had to take Rashid and Ali or someone similar, and Livingstone bowling a bit of spin gave him a shoe in.

Six quicks and may lose due to not great bowling in two of the opening three, even if they don't lose this it isn't exactly down to their bowling (and yes, BBC say isn't a quick bowlers wicket, blah blah, well they could have guessed that before picking the team and SQUAD

re Hain and Abell, wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of Hain BUT as I've also said before need more structure, get a player or five in the SQUAD for a couple of years prior to the World Cup, or after and then change as necessary, not just pick here and there. Brook is on a hiding to nothing with only a dozen caps to his name, regardless of where it is played a bit of experience is necessary ahead of a competition like this, not everyone can come in last ditch a la Pietersen (Ashes) and Archer (various) and hit the ground running like they were born with bat and/or ball in hand
