McGrath and Tendulkar are probably the guys in the modern era with the most consistent success against everyone, everywhere. I’d go with that.

Funny how both sides are so sure.
I even voted for Sobers + Imran in the other poll so it'd be silly for me to be not sure here.

But this is a good thread for that reason. Gets to the crux of a lot of a debates without actually needing to get into seventeen layers of weeds to get to them.

McGrath's batting and Tendulkar's bowling - What good are they.

I'm thinking of a 2 player side with 9 fielders. If we add riders around rest of the team composition, it becomes complicated.

Imran + Kallis for sure

Gives so many options - can bat deep, play 2 (or even 3) spinners if needed in a 6-man attack etc.

IMO, it's because of looking at it in a different way.

The Imran/Kallis crowd are looking at theoretical cumulative averages and concluding they come out on top

In practice though the McGrath/Tendulkar will get better results and win more games of cricket. McGrath factor alone makes the difference, with his record at getting out the best batsmen.

Also there is the highly erroneous assumption that I think a lot of people are coming to based on career averages, that Kallis & Sachin are approxmately equal in batting, and that McGrath & Imran are in bowling.

How can one be more incorrect?

Depends again on the team.

A weak team would prefer the specialists to shore up their batting and bowling first IMO whereas a strong team who already have their bases covered would prefer the all-rounders to enhance the team options.

I don't think the gap between Imran and McGrath as bowlers is that significant, in fact Imran will win you certain matches that McGrath won't, but Tendulkar and Kallis is a serious gap in quality.

I think overall though, I lean towards McGrath and Tendulkar.

I think my question is answered.

Actually, on second thought, I think I would need to see the makeup of the weak team too since I can think of lineups where Kallis and Imran would be more valuable, especially if you don't have any part-time bowlers. Overall, I think I will switch to them.
