Watched highlights again.

Ireland needed 200 runs in 25 overs with 5 wickets down . Great game 🥳
Good thing they didn't have Dhoni leading the team.

Edit: oh wait, totally forgot Dhoni actually led his team to world cup title  I should say 2019 version of Dhoni

So there is one "unknown" left in the countdown - what are our final bets as to what it will be? A reminder of some of the matches which haven't found a spot yet:

'87 Final
'92 Semi
'92 Final
'96 Final
'15 Semi
That match that Jadeja won for India. That is yet to come.

I hope not
In its defence, the 438 vs 434 match was a closer finish than I had imagined. I'd always thought that SA chased it down with time and wickets to spare, but watching it the other night, turns out it was only by one wicket, and that in the final over of the 50. But despite that, I'm still with you on this one. I think a great match does need some semblance of contest between bat and ball. Presumably we'll both be disappointed though.

I agree with the balance part but that 438 game was so much of an outlier even by modern standards that it deserves a top 3 spot, just not no.1.

Preferences differ, which is fine. One question though. Would it be so highly rated if Australia had hold on to win by 1 or 2 runs? Genuine question, and I hold no strong opinion on the matter.

No since something similar happened in this match

I definitely much prefer watching much lower scorer ODIs. But there are always exceptions, and the list isn't "which games Prince EWS made this face during"

It has to be there, balance or not. Much as we'd definitely see a game there if a team won by 3 runs defending 21.

No you're missing the context of the game. It wasn't just a high scoring game, it was way higher scoring than anything that had happened before in ODIs, and both teams made those runs. It was also the 2 consistently best teams in the world.

If the exact same thing happened again a year or 2 later it wouldn't be special

Yes. Would have been rated higher because we all love SA chokes.

The 438 game also had the backdrop of being a 5 match decider which was tied 2-2. So it wasn't a random game.

The context of that game is that pitch was among the roadiest and bowling was the most pedestrian in recorded cricket history.

It went right down the wire, even aside from the fact that the World Record was broken immediately after it was set.

Noone wants every game of cricket to be like that, but when just one is - **** yeah it's in the top ten of all time for sure.
Yes , also you have to cast your mind back to the time , when we all thought 300 would take a tremendous effort to chase down..When the World Record got broken twice ..It was unbelievable.
