another little-known (or at least rarely discussed) part of the 434/438 game is how Australia sent Brett Lee in at no. 6 with a few overs to go as a hitter when they still had the likes of Damien Martyn and Michael Clarke to come in. Now this could be written off as a logical tactic given Lee was known as able to hit a big ball, however he still wasn't actually that good a batsman. He managed 9* (7) which you would think a combination of Martyn and/or Clarke would be able to better most of the time, and I believe that sending Lee up was an act of overconfidence from the Aussies that they thought they had way too many runs already and were just having fun with it at that point.

That Lee was not really used in this role at the end of an innings during his career before or after makes me think that were the game situation more balanced (in Australia's opinion) they wouldn't have done this and could have ended up with a few more runs to play with

Whatever it takes!!!
Late 90s onwards has pretty much all been JAMODIs outside of big tournaments. And the farther along we have been in this time frame, the more M the JAMODIs have become.

Within that context, that 434 game was such an awesome one. I still remember hanging out at the beach with friends that evening and then rushing back home with that school friends gang to watch the last 25 overs or so of the chase at my home, which was just 10 mins walk from both the Chepauk and the beach. It is definitely one of the most memorable ODIs for me. Top 3 for sure.

It was a ridiculous scorecard. Ridiculous that Clarke or Martyn didn’t even bat.

and then SA winning despite Kallis and AB scoring at less than a run a ball

???How do you reckon? Teams took non tournament ODIs pretty seriously up until the mid-late 2000s imo.
I dunno man.. .watching 3 consecutive variations of Ind-Aus/SL-third team at Sharjah got pretty boring for me. Teams took it more seriously than they do today for sure, which is why I said the M has gotten stronger as time has gone by but I think the endless ODI churn was a thing even in the late 90s for me.

Four games left - going for the 438, 2019 final, 1999 semi and, if any sense in the world, 1992 final. Not in order.

However, still only ones Pakistani game featured and that a loss to India so not sure if Cricinfo will be putting that 1992 final in there.

think it will be those four

if I had to do the list, I’d add the Viv 189, 1996 final, 2015 semifinal between SA and NZ (assuming they miss it) and blow out the Ind / Eng tie, the ABDV knock and the India / Pak 2003 match.

Preferences differ, which is fine. One question though. Would it be so highly rated if Australia had hold on to win by 1 or 2 runs? Genuine question, and I hold no strong opinion on the matter.
Yeah, probably a bit less so, but world record smashed then a close result either way will always go down as a classic, at least in that era

the Tri-Series in Australia was a pretty big deal until about the mid 2000s, probably bigger than the Tests each summer (excluding Ashes/WI series)
These tri series and the Mercantile Mutual Cup (one day domestic games) are what got me into cricket as a kid.

I eventually learned that Tests were better but those series were huge. I think part of the reason for that was how dominant Australia were in Tests - ODIs were closer (or at least easier to generate upsets in) and hence more exciting. It really took for me to start watching Tests outside Australia to find them interesting.

Been nothing that comes close to it in quality ODI.

2019 WC Final was a low scoring affair that turned into an absolute farce. Only memorable for being controversial after a tied finish.

Top 10 for me(in no particular order except the first two)

99 SF Aus vs SA
2019 WC Final
438 game
Ire vs Eng 2011
2015 SF NZ vs SA
2015 WC Aus vs NZ
1987 WC final
1983 WC final
Viv 189(the only match maybe asides of Ksoil 175, that deserves be to here on the merit of once knock)
1975 WC final(historical importance aside, pretty great match, Lloyd‘ ATG innings, Fredericks vs Lillee, Viv’s run outs, the madness at the end).
